Nephi 16–22

1 Nephi 17:13And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led.”

Even though the Lord prepares a way for us, He expects us to face challenges and obstacles along the way. We can maneuver better and stay the course if we petition Him for help and follow Him.

1 Nephi 17:3 The Lord is never far from us. “If so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them.” He will provide means for us, just like He did for Nephi’s family.

Yes, in today’s world, as in the history of the world, bad things happen to good people. Good people make the best of bad things.

The Savior will help me face life’s challenges.

1 Nephi 16–18

It’s a challenging world, and our lives will be challenging. How can I face adversity with faith in Jesus Christ?

Some of Nephi’s experiences: (Note the challenges, how Nephi responded, and how the Lord helped):

1 Nephi 16:17–32 Nephi’s bow broke; other bows had lost their spring; they had no food; some were losing hope and began to doubt. They blamed Nephi because his bow was the last to break. They were not in the proper frame of mind or state of Spirit to hear Nephi preach to them. Nephi took again and made a bow and arrow and asked his father where to go to hunt food. Lehi prays to know. Lehi’s household is chastised by the Lord and feels sorrow. The Liahona worked when the people were faithful to the Lord and heeded the information He gave them. The Liahona showed Nephi where to go to get food. He brought back wild beasts to their families. They were humbled, grateful and full of joy.

16:34–39 Ishmael dies. Daughter mourn and murmur. Laman stirs up trouble, proposing they kill Lehi and Nephi. The Lord chastens them. They repent.

17:7–16 Nephi will build a ship. His brothers oppose him and they murmur against him and his father and their journey from Jerusalem.

18:1–4 The Lord gave Nephi instructions and vision on how to build the ship. It wasn’t build after the manner of men, but as directed by the Lord. Even his brothers said it was good.

18:9–22. Laman and Lemuel and others were acting inappropriately. Nephi tried to correct them and remind them to be faithful to the Lord. Laman and Lemuel were angry with Nephi and jealous of Nephi and bound him with cords. Nothing turned away their angry until they were on the brink of destruction. Nephi was blessed, and the Lord favored him for his righteousness, so that they could continue on their journey to the promised land.

How can you apply what you’ve learned here? (Note your own challenges, how you will respond, and how the Lord will help you. See notes in chapter 16)

Matthew 11:28–30 With Jesus, we can accomplish whatsoever the Father would have us to. He is there to help everyone.

John 14:26–27 The Holy Ghost will teach ua all things and bring all things to our remembrance.
This is a meaningful scripture. I am thankful for the peace that Jesus gives us, both through the Spirit and through His presence.

Mosiah 24:13–15 As an individual, I need to stop murmuring and trust in the Lord's timing. Some things need to be endured for a time, and if we trust in our Deliverer, He will ease our burdens and help us to find joy in the journey.

Where Can I Turn for Peace? can strengthen your faith in Jesus and strengthen your trust in the help that He offers.

Life Help

God guides me through small and simple means.

1 Nephi 16:10–16, 23–3118:11–22

God give us sufficient for our needs from day to day. He doesn’t give us a detailed road map from beginning to end. He wants us to have faith in Him and His Son and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

While Lehi’s family had the Liahona, we also have many aids for our journey. What are some of them?

1 Nephi 16:10–16, 23–31

Lehi received the Liahona. It led them in the more fertile parts of the wilderness. As they gave heed to the Lord and what He provided for them through the Liahona, it continued to work and they were led in the right way. When they were unfaithful it did not work. (One spindle showed them the way they should go. What did the other spindle do? There was a new writing written on it from time to time.)

18:10–22 When Laman and Lemuel and company were celebrating inappropriation and hardened their hearts against Nephi’s words, the Liahona wouldn’t work. Their anger and hatred, and the things that they did to Nephi, were unacceptable to the Lord. They were so hardened that they didn’t want to listen to anyone. It wasn’t until they were about to be destroyed that they let Nephi go and temporarily repented. Once there was peace again aboard the boat, the Liahona would work again.

Do the storms in your own life ever keep you from feeling the Spirit? What can you decide to do now, so that when difficulties come, you remember to turn to the Lord? Role-playing with others, or even practicing in your own mind, with pondering and prayer for guidance will certainly help.

The Liahona was a tool specifically for this family. What are some tools that have been given to you? Why is it important to seek to have the Holy Ghost with us? Are tools from the Lord helpful if we don’t follow the Spirit?

Do you recognize the seemingly small things (that are truly large in import) that the Lord has done, and is doing for you in your life, that have led to great blessings?

Alma 37:7, 38–47 By small means God brings about His purposes. I think they may be small things for God to do. But they are huge in our lives. He can confound the wise and bring about the salvation of many souls.

Doctrine and Covenants 64:33–34

No man could have made the Liahona. It was prepared by God to show them the course they should follow in the wilderness. What has been prepared for you? It worked according to the faith they had in God. Do we dismiss the favors that Heavenly Father bestows on us and forget to be thankful and recognize his mercy? Are we slothful, because the Lord has made things easier for us? Do we forget to exercise faith in Him?

The word of Christ points to us the way to eternal bliss? Are we giving heed to it? If we look to Christ, we can live forever.

We can all be guided by the Holy Ghost!

1 Nephi 10:17-19: “And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.

For he is the same yesterday, today, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.

For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.”

Even before confirmed members receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, everyone in the world can receive the power of the Holy Ghost!

When has Heavenly Father guided you through the power of the Holy Ghost?

How can I be a good example to my family like Nephi was to His?

What one thing can I start doing or do better to be a good example?

My trials can be a blessing.

1 Nephi 17:1–6, 17–22

Nephi and Sam were reared by the same parents as Laman and Lemuel. They experienced the same trials in the wilderness. Why were their experiences so different? How does agency play into our personal experiences?

1 Nephi 17:1–6: Nephi’s account of traveling in the wilderness: Nephi accentuated the positive. He was a person of faith and trusted the Lord to help him with what he needed to you.

1 Nephi 17:17–22: His brothers’ account: (or Nephi’s record of his brothers; account): They complain against Nephi and Lehi. They say Nephi can’t build a ship. They blame them for having had to leave Jerusalem.

What did Nephi know or do that helped him have a faithful perspective?”

The Lord Instructs Nephi to Build a Ship: 1 Nephi 17:7-10:

Nephi’s Courage

How did Nephi maintain his courage, even when his brothers mocked him? Where did Nephi’s strength come from?

Nephi had never built a ship, but he turned to the Lord for help, and received specific and detailed inspiration on how to built the ship.

1 Nephi 18:1 “And it came to pass that they did worship the Lord, and did go forth with me; and we did work timbers of curious workmanship. And the Lord did show me from time to time after what manner I should work the timbers of the ship.”

Heavenly Father can help us do hard things, just like He helped Nephi.

Do activity page found in lesson.

I can “liken all scriptures” to myself.

1 Nephi 19:22–2420–22

1 Nephi 19:23And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.”

In our personal study and in discussions and discourse with others, we should be practicing likening the scriptures to ourselves, so that they can profit us and give us direction.

Too many times, people read surface stories in the scripture, and then judge people from the past by the cultural norms of today. What good is that? When we wrest the scriptures, it’s to our detriment and destruction.

But if we read with the intent to learn, repent, and change; if we ponder with an open heart, seeking enlightenment from the Spirit; if we pray for understanding, we will be let by the Spirit to understand what the Lord has in the verses just for us. We can learn from both the examples and the mistakes of the past; and. Hopefully, along the way, we can apply the gospel principles that we find and become better disciples.

Nephi found so much so much spiritual power in the scriptures, and he knew that they were important to lead himself and his children to Jesus Christ.

2 Nephi 25:26 “And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.”

1 Nephi 20:1–9.What do these verses teach about the people in Isaiah’s time? What do you find that applies to you?

Vs 1 Be a covenant keeper.

Vs 2 Trust in the Lord above everyone and everything else.

Vs 4 Be humble, teachable, and reachable.

Thru 9 Acknowledge the gifts, revelation, creations, and miracles that come from the Lord. Praise Him, give Him the credit and glory, and return thanks to Him.

Vs 9-11 God chooses to be patience with us and not cut us off. We are given trials to help refine us so that we will return to Him.

Vs 12-18
Give the glory to Jesus. Praise Him and tell others of Him. Keep His commandments and the covenant.

Vs 20 Declare that Jesus has redeemed you and that He is the Savior and Redeemer. He will deliver His people.

Vs 21-22 He has done all things for the preservation of His people.

1 Nephi 20:17–22.What do these verses teach about how Heavenly Father led the people of Isaiah’s time? How does He invite you to follow Him?

We can learn from the righteousness and blessings of others, and also from their mistakes and our own. We need to rely on the Lord. He alone can deliver, protect, and help us progress.

What else do you find in 1 Nephi 20–22 that you can “liken” to yourself?

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/16?lang=eng

The wicked take the truth to be hard—Lehi’s sons marry the daughters of Ishmael—The Liahona guides their course in the wilderness—Messages from the Lord are written on the Liahona from time to time—Ishmael dies; his family murmurs because of afflictions. About 600–592 B.C.

Vs 4-5 There were times when Laman and Lemuel were contrite adn hand righteous desires. This must have been a joyous time for Nephi and all Lehi's family.

Vs 7-8 Having and hearkening to the word of God is one of our greatest blessings, and also a commandment. Being married according to God's plan of happiness for His children is also a commandment. Lehi fulfilled all the commandments of the Lord, and Nephi was also blessed for being obedient.

The laws of honoring and loving God first, honoring our parents, and marriage being between a man and a woman have not changed.

Vs 9-10 The voice of the Lord let Lehi know it was time for his family to continue their journey. The next morning, he found the Liahona at the door of his tent. The Lord provided direction for Lehi's family as they traveled; the direction was contingent upon their faith in the Lord and the heed they gave to the commandments.

Vs 14, 16 The Liahona led them through the most fertile parts of the wilderness. Isn't it wonderful that the Lord gives us the nourishment we need when we are true to Him?

Vs 18-19  Do you get hangry? The want of food can truly weaken our resolves. Nephi's brothers were now also concerned about their wives and children. They needed physical nourishment.

Vs 20 Laman, Lemuel and some of Ishmael's son began to murmer. They and their families were suffering and sad. Lehi also murmured. He had trusted in the Lord, and he had the huge weight of being the Patriarch and Propeht of his family. Yet he was weak and helpless and didn't see a way out.

What less important things have caused you to murmur? How can you remind yourself that the Lord has always provided for you and He always will. Do you remember that He can do all things, that He loves you, and that your trials and your suffering are for your good and will refine and help you? It's hard when you are already feeling downtrodden.

Vs 21 Nephi was blamed. Do you ever blame others when something goes wrong, or when you don't feel comfortable or happy? None of their bows were functional any more. Things wear out. They break. Are you ever angry, sad, or disheartened when all your cars have troubles at once? Do you wonder how you're gonig to make it? How the bills will get paid? If you're ever going to be out of debt? Do you sometimes think it's someone else's fault? Maybe the mechanic didn't do something right or diagnosed wrong? It's easy to complain and forget that the Lord will help us and sustain us, even when we still have to continue the same hard journey.

Vs 22 I'm not sure what Nephi spoke to his brothers. Did he gave them messages of hope, or messages that they should stop murmuring and be faithful? But they were downtrodden and they weren't ready to hear. There is a fundamental hierarchy of needs. And they needed food. They also needed to have faith and trust in the Lord. Remember is one of the most important words in the scriptures. Nephi often recounts specifc deliverance stories to his brothers. Do I remember what great things the Lord has done for me? We need to remember daily, hourly, all the time, by expressing gratitude and living with a prayer in our heart. We can't remember the Lord without thinking about Him and keeping Him with us.

Vs 23 Nephi was proactive. Instead of murmuring, Nephi took positive action. He made a bow and arrow so he could hunt. And he asked his prophet father where he should go to find food for the family? It's so much easier to murmur when things don't go our way. What can we do currently to decide how we'll respond when the challenge comes?

Vs 24 Lehi hearkened and was gladdened by Nephi's faith and inquired of the Lord. Everyone had humbled themselves because of Nephi's words. Are you speaking to your own family in the energy of your soul to help them increase in faith? What can you do better?

Vs 25-27 The Lord chastened Lehi and his family. The words written on the Liahona were cause them to fear and tremble. They were brought to be sorrowful. How does sorrow play a part in our own repentance and growth?

Vs 28-29 The Liahona was a tool which worked properly when the people were faithful to the Lord and diligently obeyed the commandments and followed the instruction found in the Liahona. When new writing was there that was an added blessing.

Vs 30-31 The Liahona pointed the way for Nephi to go to hunt and he was able to slay wild beasts to feed their families.

Vs 32 When the Lord helps us with what we need, do we respond with joy and thanksgiving?

Vs 33-36 Ishmael died. His daughters mourn and murmer against Lehii and Nephi. They want to return to Jerusalem.

Vs 37-38 Ishmael died. His daughters mourn and murmer against Lehii and Nephi. They want to return to Jerusalem.

After that Laman stirs up Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael, proposing that they slay Lehi and Nephi.

V 39 The Lord called them swiftly te repentance. They did repent and the Lord again blessed them with food, so that they didn't perish.

How can you apply what you’ve learned here? (Note your own challenges, how you will respond, and how the Lord will help you. See notes in chapter 16)

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/17?lang=eng

Nephi is commanded to build a ship—His brethren oppose him—He exhorts them by recounting the history of God’s dealings with Israel—Nephi is filled with the power of God—His brethren are forbidden to touch him, lest they wither as a dried reed. About 592–591 B.C.

Vs 1-3 Nephi looked for the good and found it in every situation. Raw meat would cause me to murmur. It did. Bob and I were given raw prime rib, instead of medium rare. It should have been cooked better. I'm still murmring. Look for the good, Heidi Ho.

Vs 7-9 Be a can do person. When you don't know how, ask the Lord for help. Have faith.

Vs 12-15 Lehi's people were blessed to a great degree because of Nephi's faithfulness. How can I learn to recognize the Lord's hand in my life and to know that he's got this? He is working behind the scenes, in front, in the middle in the back. Our happiness and eternal salvation is His work and glory.

Vs 17-22
Laman and Lemuel complain against Nephi in the next few verses. They say he can't build a ship. They think that his and their father's faith is in vain and that they are foolish. They still are griping about having to leave Jerusalem and defending the the people there as a righteous people.

Vs 23-32 Nephi boldly shared the history of their forbearers, probably to encourage his brothers to faith and a desire to move forward in building the ship.

But what most likely happened is that they were infuriated that he would compare himself to Moses and their situation to Moses's people.

Can you see how the stories of the past are beneficial to you now and how you can learn from them if you are humble?

Vs 35 God loves us all, but the righteous are favored and blessed according to their faith and obedience.

Vs 36-42 The earth was made by God for His children. There is enough and to spare. He gives freely to His children. He loves thoses who will have Him to be their God.

Vs 44-45
Consider that Nephi's words are for us. We need to be reminded to be humble and to remember the Lord. We need to want the best for others, even when things don't go our way and we are hated of them. We need to follow the prophet and trust in the word of the Lord.

We shouldn't speak to others as Nephi did, UNLESS we are led to do so by the Spirit; and in that case, no matter how difficult that may be, or what difficulties it may bring upon us, we should.

Some of Nephi’s experiences: (Note the challenges, how Nephi responded, and how the Lord helped):

1 Nephi 17:1–6: Nephi’s account of traveling in the wilderness: Nephi accentuated the positive. He was a person of faith and trusted the Lord to help him with what he needed to you.

1 Nephi 17:17–22: His brothers’ account: (or Nephi’s record of his brothers; account): They complain against Nephi and Lehi. They say Nephi can’t build a ship. They blame them for having had to leave Jerusalem.

The ship is finished—The births of Jacob and Joseph are mentioned—The company embarks for the promised land—The sons of Ishmael and their wives join in revelry and rebellion—Nephi is bound, and the ship is driven back by a terrible tempest—Nephi is freed, and by his prayer the storm ceases—The people arrive in the promised land. About 591–589 B.C.

Vs 3 How often do I go to the temple and to solitary places to commune with God and seek revelation? Can I do more?

Vs 12 Because of the rudeness, the pride, the envy, and the hate Laman and Lemuel had; and because of how they treated Nephi, the Liahona stopped working, or in other words, they lost that blessing a privilege from the Lord.

Vs 15-16 Accept reproof and correction quickly. Never wait until you are on the brink of destruction.

Vs 17-20 Laman and Lemuel ignored Lehi's and Sariah's pleading; they ignored the sons of Ishmael; they ignored their youngest brothers Jacob and Joseph's suffering; they ignored Nephi's wife and children. Only when they saw that they were threatened with destruction did they yield to the power of God and let Nephi go.

Vs 21-22 Once Nephi was free from being tied up, he took the compass, and the Lord hearked to Nephi. The winds and storm ceased, the compass worked, and the sea was calm.

Nephi guided the ship as they sailed to the promised land. Whether his brothers liked it or not, Nephi was the chosen ruler for the people.

Some of Nephi’s experiences: (Note the challenges, how Nephi responded, and how the Lord helped):

Nephi makes plates of ore and records the history of his people—The God of Israel will come six hundred years from the time Lehi left Jerusalem—Nephi tells of His sufferings and crucifixion—The Jews will be despised and scattered until the latter days, when they will return unto the Lord. About 588–570 B.C.

Vs 3, 5 Nephi was already making a record of the history of his people, when the Lord commanded him to make a record for the spiritual instruction of his people as well.

Vs 7 Do I revere Jesus and hearken to the voice of his counsels, or do I trample Him under my feet?

Vs 9-14 Nephi saw the Lord's Messianic role, and how he suffered persecution and death at the hands of wicked men. He cites many other sources where other prophets also testifies of these things.

Vs 15-17 The Jews will be hated and scattered. Israel will be gathered again. All nations shall see the salvation of the Lord.

Vs 18-19
We have sacred writings given to us so that we can be persuaded to remember Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.

Vs 23-24 Because God will welcome everyone into covenant Israel, we should like the scriptures to ourselves, so that they can be for our profit and learning.

The Messiah will be a light to the Gentiles and will free the prisoners—Israel will be gathered with power in the last days—Kings will be their nursing fathers—Compare Isaiah 49. About 588–570 B.C.

Vs 1
We are called upon by the Lord to hearken unto Him. The reason branches of Israel have been broken off is because of the wickedness and poor leadership of our leaders.

Vs 5-7 Jesus indeed was sent to save us. All are invited to come unto Him. Soon everyone will know that He is the Light of the world.

Vs 8-11 Great are the promises of the Lord to us in our salvation and exaltation. if we turn to Him, we can find safety, deliverance, forgiveness and protection in this life; and then eternal glory with Him in the mansions of His Father.

Vs 12-16 We have great reason to rejoice, for the Lord will gather and establish us. He will never forget or forsake us. He has engraven us on the palms of His hands, and our walls are continually before Him.

Vs 17-19 There is safety in the covenant. There is safety in Zion and in establishing her and in inviting others to come unto Christ. Our church and our temples are places of safety. These are indeed walls that are set up for protection against wordliness and the wiles of the devil; but, we are to be inviting others to Come and See and join us within our walls. Jesus's work is the work of salvation, and ours should be too.

Vs 22-25 The Lord will work for the blessing of Israel through the Gentiles. He will bring them home.

Vs 26 Jesus will indeed restore and save Israel. He will save our children. All nations "and all flesh shall know that [He], the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob."

Israel will be scattered upon all the face of the earth—The Gentiles will nurse and nourish Israel with the gospel in the last days—Israel will be gathered and saved, and the wicked will burn as stubble—The kingdom of the devil will be destroyed, and Satan will be bound. About 588–570 B.C.

Vs 5 When we harden our hearts against Jesus Christ, we are scattered, both physically and spiritually.

Vs 7-9 What am I doing to help gather scattered Israel? I am part of Abrahams seed that is supposed to be blessing the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ, so that they can feel peace and  receive the ordinances that will prepare them for exaltation, too.

Vs 10-12 How is the Lord gathering His people with His sleeves rolled up right now?

You should be praying more for those who are in turmoil and needing His deliverance right now.

Vs 14-19 Truly there is great evil going on. Nations displacing people of other nations for nothing by greed and envy. Will I live to see some of the wicked leaders and people being destroyed by fire? I do want relief for those who are persecuted for nothing other than living in their own lands in their own homes. But this is a sad thing. I wish people would turn to Christ and live

Vs 20-22 Yes the Lord surely has prepard the way. He sent His Son and He worked out every detail for our salvation. The wicked will be cut off. Jesus will execute judgment in righteousness. And if I am righteous, I have no reason to fear.

Vs 24-26 Jesus will come again soon and reign throughout the millennium and then forever! He is gathering His children, and they recognize his voice and will follow Him. The righteousness of His followings will help bring about peace. Satan will have no power iver the hearts of the people. Jesus will reign.

Vs 28 If we want safety, we have to repent.

Vs 31 “If ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is. Amen.”.
