                                                                                             Simon Dewey

Nephi wrote so much from Isaiah, because he wanted us to believe in Jesus Christ.

2 Nephi 11:4 “My soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ”

Nephi saw the future generations of his posterity. He knew that even though they had been taught so much, and had been so greatly blessed, they would be prideful and depart from the right way. What about us? Huh? We need to stop making judgments on people in the past. We have their stories so that we can learn to do better. But we are making the same mistakes.

Isaiah’s writings contain good warnings for us, just like they did for Nephi’s people. Isaiah’s writings also help us gain a glorious hope in the future! A future when there will be no more wickedness, everyone will love one another, the faithful will be gathered, light will burst for on all the earth, the Savior will reign forever and ever.

2 Nephi 19:2). “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

I am so thankful that Jesus was willing to enter mortality, atone for us, and become our Savior. All the promised made by all the Holy prophets are possible because of Him.

2 Nephi 19:6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

How can I better understand the teachings of Isaiah?

2 Nephi 25:4 “The words of Isaiah are not plain unto you, nevertheless they are plain unto all those that are filled with the spirit of prophecy….my soul delighteth in plainness unto my people, that they may learn.

What can help me make the writings of Isaiah more accessible for personal understanding? (It really helped when I took the BYU religion class on Isaiah. But that was long enough ago, that I need to relearn.)

Having the Spirit helps us understand many things. Being familiar with the language used in the scriptures also helps; so multiple readings makes understanding more accessible.

·        Liken his words unto” yourself (2 Nephi 11:2) “I will liken his words unto my people.”
This is important every time we read the scriptures. What does the Lord have there for you to understand? How can you improve your faith, obedience, service, and testimony? When you read for your own understanding and improvement, you will be blessed to see and understand more. Application is so necessary to true learning.

2 Nephi 14:5–6 Are you allowing the Lord to be a defense in your home, by making good and solid choices there. If so, He will protect you there day and night, just like He did the children of Israel while they were traveling through the wilderness.

“What does Heavenly Father want me to learn?” How can show application of this in my life and family?

·        Look for symbols of Jesus Christ

2 Nephi 11:4 Does your soul delight in testifying of Christ, inviting others to come unto Him, and teaching them about His love and mercy?

Isaiah teaches about our Savior using symbols. (
2 Nephi 19:2)
Jesus is the Light of the world.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

·        Seek to be “filled with the spirit of prophecy” (2 Nephi 25:4).

We need to pray for spiritual guidance so we can optimize our study and learning, with the desire to come closer to Christ and do His will. The Spirit will help you learn those things that are important for you to know.

Isaiah testified of Jesus Christ.

2 Nephi 11–19

Look for the Savior in 2 Nephi 13:1314:4–615:1–716:1–717:1418:14–1522:2. (See chapter readings below.) What do these verses teach you about Him?

2 Nephi 19:6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Jesus is the Son of God, the son of Mary, the step-son of Joseph. But He was born for us! He was chosen to be our Savior. He is the Head of His Church. He will be over the government of the entire world during the Millennium. He is a wonderful counselor. He is a Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.

Jesus Christ: The Caregiver of Our Soul

The proud and worldly will be humbled.

2 Nephi 12–1315

1 Nephi 12:19 As prophesied, pride caused the downfall of Nephi’s people. In all history and literature, pride comes before the fall.

In chapters 12 and 13, look for words that Isaiah used to describe pridefulness, such as lofty and haughty. (See notes in chapter readings below.)

In 2 Nephi 15:1–24, look for symbolic language describing the results of pride. (See notes in chapter 15 below.)

How will you choose to be humble? How will you check yourself when you notice pride getting the better of you?

Chapter 18: Beware of Pride

The temple is the house of the Lord.

2 Nephi 12:2–3

2 Nephi 12:2 Isaiah referred to the temple “the mountain of the Lord’s house.” Why is a mountain a good symbol for the temple? How can we elevate our own lives in preparation to go to the mountain of the Lord? How do the ordinances, the spirit, and the blessings of the temple elevate us?

Why do we need temples?

2 Nephi 12:2–3 And it shall come to pass in the last days, when the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it.

And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

We are taught the ways of the Lord in temples. We are taught how to walk in His paths, by receiving ordinances and making covenants with Him. We are taught His law and covenant to keep it. The temple is a place of learning and direction. It is a place to feel the Spirit and receive revelation.

The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation

What does the Lord want you to learn and experience in His holy house?
What experiences have you had there?

Temples

This is a great selection to share on social media or to us in teaching a lesson. (I’m sharing it!)

High on the Mountain Top

For kids:

The temple is the house of the Lord.

2 Nephi 12:2–3

Because the temple is the mountain of the Lord’s house, you could go on a family hike to teach this verses, or have your children role-play hiking together as these verses are read. (Go on a hike!)

2 Nephi 12:2–3 (See verses in section above.)

Notice phrases that say why we have temples.

2 Nephi 12:3 We will walk in thy paths. (Have a path that leads to the temple for the children to follow.)

What are some things we can do to walk in His paths?

Look ahead. Have a family goal of going to the temple together. Have the children picture themselves going to the temple. They could draw a picture of themselves at the temple. Drive to the nearest temple and take a photo of your family there or if each child and the temple. Display these at home.  Have the children plan to go to do baptisms for the dead as soon as they are able. Include them in family history and genealogy work.

I Love to See the Temple Choose phrases from the song that teach what a temple is and what we do there.

Jesus Christ will redeem His people.

2 Nephi 12–19

Even though this is a time of great wickedness on the earth, it is also a time of great light and hope. Isaiah saw that.

2 Nephi 12:1–5 The temple offers hope and direction, light and protection to everyone who seeks blessings there. It is a great symbol of the gathering. As we invite people to make covenants with the Lord through baptism and in our temples, they will be endowed with power from on high. Our collective righteousness will empower us to be able to stand in this day and be a light to others, as we prepare for the Second Coming of our Savior.

14:2–6 The stakes of Zion will be a protection and defense against the evils of the world. As we seek to build up Zion, we offer all those that seek to be pure in heart a place to turn…that is towards their Savior.

15:20–26 We live in a day where people call evil good and hate those who hold to good as true. There are those who love the dark and called it light. Satan lies to many that bitterness is sweet, and people keep seeking for things they will never find and feel in evil places.

We live in a day when many are so proud. They think because the can read and write and converse that they are all that!

We live in a day of gluttony and addiction. People are prisoners to their own lusts.

We live in a day where those who do wickedly are praised and given reward and celebrated, and those who are righteous are condemned.

Isaiah saw all this, and he said that they will all be cut off root and branch and burned.

But the Lord is merciful. His hand is stretched out still. He is giving us a chance to soften our hearts and reach out in love, friendship, and fellowship, and invite others to come unto Christ, and be saved through belief on His name. He is lifting His ensign to the nation! Be a child of God! Be a child of the Covenant! Be a disciple of Christ! As we serve Him, He will sustain us and help us not to be weary in doing good and not to stumble or lose our way. Be a believer!

19:2–8 So, so powerful. Without a Savior, we are all in bondage to our mistakes and wrongs. But we were promised salvation through Jesus Christ, and He was born of our Heavenly Father and his earthly mother Mary. He lived a perfect life, so that He could atone for us and lead us back into our Father’s presence. He is the light that shines in darkness. His is the light that ushered in the restoration and is constant, pure and true. By keeping the commandments, we are seeking to walk in His light and be led by Him. There is no better or more perfect path than the One provided by our Heavenly Father (Parents).

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of government and peace there is no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this.

For kids:

Jesus Christ is my Savior.

2 Nephi 11:4–717:1419:6

Look for some of Jesus’s titles or names, and their meanings, in the following verses:

2 Nephi 11:4–7 Christ=The Anointed One

17:14 Immanuel=God with us

19:6 Wonderful, Counselor, Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace

What do these names teach us about Jesus? Is He our Friend? Do we love Him?

Video: The Christ Child: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/video/2019-09-0050-the-christ-child-a-nativity-story-lighttheworld?lang=eng

The shepherds saw baby Jesus. Simeon and Anna saw baby Jesus. The wise men saw baby Jesus. How did they feel? Were they happy? Were they thankful?

We probably knew that Jesus was born when we were still in heaven? How do you think we felt?

Are you looking forward to seeing Jesus when He comes back to the earth?

For kids:

Satan tries to confuse me about good and evil.

2 Nephi 15:20

Would you be happy if I gave you a sour lemon in a candy wrapper? Is candy sweet? Is lemon sweet or sour? Would you believe me if I told you that a lemon is sweet?

2 Nephi 15:20 “Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Why is it wrong for people to try to deceive us or to lie to us about how things really are? Why is it wrong to lie instead of tell the truth?

Why do you think Satan wants to deceive us? Why does he want us to believe things that aren’t true or things that are lies?

Why do Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to know the truth, be truthful and follow Them?

Video: You Will Be Freed: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/video/2011-12-0022-you-will-be-freed?lang=eng

Why does Satan want to hook us or trap us? Why does the devil make things look alluring or pleasant, when they really will trap us and make us weak?

How do Heavenly Father and Jesus help us avoid temptation, Satan’s deceptions, and traps that will weaken us?

(The Holy Ghost, prayer, the scriptures, parents, primary, good friends, choosing the right, knowing that we are sons and daughters of God.)

“I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.”

Who wants us to be strong?

Jacob saw his Redeemer—The law of Moses typifies Christ and proves He will come. About 559–545 B.C.

Vs 2-3 Law of Witnesses: Isaiah, Nephi, and Jacob all saw Jehovah, Jesus Christ.

This verse also foreshadows the Witnesses for The Book or Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Vs 5-7 Nephi loves sharing the gospel. He invites us to liken the words of Isaiah to ourselves.

Isaiah sees the latter-day temple, gathering of Israel, and millennial judgment and peace—The proud and wicked will be brought low at the Second Coming—Compare Isaiah 2. About 559–545 B.C.

Vs 2-3 This is a refernce to all of our Latter-day temples.

Many people quote these verses in reference to the Salt Lake Temple and to Salt Lake City, the current Head Quarters for the Church. I also believe that is so; but, I think it may even speak more particularly of the New Jerusalem when Zion is more established.

Vs 4 Temples are a necessary part of welcoming the Lord's second coming and ushering the Millennium.

Vs 5 We all have sin. As part of the gathering, we are all invited to come to the Lord before and in anticipation of His Second Coming. And we in turn must invite our brothers and sisters.

Vs 11-12 The Lord is coming. The humble and repentant will He save with the rigtheous, and the proud and evil ones in the earth shall be destroyed.

Vs 19-22 It will be too late to hide ourselves or our sins when the Lord returns in the glory of His majesty and arises to shake terribly the earth.

Look for words that Isaiah used to describe pridefulness, such as lofty and haughty.

Vs 11 lofty looks; haughtiness of man

Vs 12: proud and lofty; lifted up

Vs 13: Cedars of Lebanon; high and lifted up; oaks of Bashan

Vs 14: high mountains; hills; all nations that are lifted up; every people

Vs 15: every high tower; ever fenced wall

Vs 16: all the ships of the sea (cruises); all the ships of Tarshish; all pleasant pictures (caring more about sharing sites than the gospel of Jesus Christ).

Vs 17: loftiness of man; haughtiness of man

Vs 18: idols

Judah and Jerusalem will be punished for their disobedience—The Lord pleads for and judges His people—The daughters of Zion are cursed and tormented for their worldliness—Compare Isaiah 3. About 559–545 B.C.

Vs 10-11 We will all be judged by the thoughts and intents of our hearts and by the deeds that we do.

Vs 12 WIcked rulers lead their people to destruction.

Look for the Savior in 2 Nephi 13:13. What does this verses teach you about Him?

Vs 13 “The Lord standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.”

Jesus is our Friend. He is pleading with the Father that we might repent and be saved. He will just us in mercy and truth.

Vs 14-15 The leaders of the people will be accountable to the Lord for their unrighteousness in promoting their own well and enslaving their people.

Look for words that Isaiah used to describe pridefulness, such as lofty and haughty.

Vs 1: the stay and the staff; whole staff of bread; whole stay of water

Vs 2: the mighty man; the man of war; the judge; the prophet; the prudent; the ancient

Vs 3: the captain of fifty; the honorable man; the counselor; the cunning artificer; the eloquent orator

Vs 5: oppressed by each other; behave unseemly (child to ancient, and base to honorable)

Vs 8: tongues and doings against the Lord; provoke the eyes of the Lord’s glory

Vs 9: the show of their countenance witnesses against them; their sin is as Sodom (sodomy, homosexuality, transgender, etc.);

Vs 16: daughters of Zion are haughty; stretched-forth necks; wanton eyes; wearing costly jewels and ornaments

Vs 18: tinkling ornaments; cauls; round tires like the moon

Vs 19: chains; bracelets; mufflers

Vs 20: bonnets; ornaments of the legs; headbands; tablets; earrings

Vs 21: rings; nose jewels

Vs 22: too many clothes; mantles; wimples; crisping pins;

Vs 23: glasses; fine linen; hoods; veils

Zion and her daughters will be redeemed and cleansed in the millennial day—Compare Isaiah 4. About 559–545 B.C.

Look for the Savior in 14:4–6 What do these verses teach you about Him?

Vs 4-6 When we allow for the Savior to wash away our filth through His wonderful Atonement, we will be blessed beyond measure. God will be our defense both day and night. He will be our shelter in all circumstances.

Are you choosing to allow the Lord to cleanse, protect and keep you? He wants to bless you.

The Lord’s vineyard (Israel) will become desolate, and His people will be scattered—Woes will come upon them in their apostate and scattered state—The Lord will lift an ensign and gather Israel—Compare Isaiah 5. About 559–545 B.C.

Look for the Savior in 15:1–7 What do these verses teach you about Him?
In 2 Nephi 15:1–24, look for symbolic language describing the results of pride.

There is another series of wo’s in this chapter. List those sometime.

Vs 1-6 The Lord loves His children and has watched over us all from the beginning. He has provided everything that we need for salvation and exaltation. We need to make the most of the opportunities and even the challenges that we have.

Vs 7 We are the Lord's vineyard. We have the choice of wheth er we bring forth good or bitter fruit. Faith in Jesus Christ, Repentance, Obedience to he law and ordinances of the gospel, Love for God and our Fellowmen; all these things will help us yield good fruit.

We need to spread the gospel. We need to have knowledge of the Lord and his ways, and we need to accept His Spirit as our guide.

Most of the world is now in bondage, to addictions, to lusts, to oppression.

Vs 15-16 Choose to be humble and to exalt and praise the Lord. This is the proper thing to do.

Vs 18 Wo pronounced upon those we are vain and entice others to join in iniquity and lead children of the Lord astray.

Vs 19-20 Practice faith in Jesus Christ and in God's timing. Do not seek to make evil acceptable.

Vs 24-25 he Lord's hand is always stretched forth to save; but, sometimes it is stretched forth to reprove for evil.

Vs 26 The gospel will be carried to all. I need more understanding of what the following verses mean.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/16?lang=eng

Isaiah sees the Lord—Isaiah’s sins are forgiven—He is called to prophesy—He prophesies of the rejection by the Jews of Christ’s teachings—A remnant will return—Compare Isaiah 6. About 559–545 B.C.

Look for the Savior in 16:1–7. What do these verses teach you about Him?

Vs 1 Isaiah saw the Lord setting upon a throne in the temple.

Vs 3 In our temples, these words are written: "Holiness to the Lord; the House of the Lord." In this verse someone cried out, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory."

Vs 5-7 Isaiah saw the Lord and recognized his own imperfections in contrast to the Lord.

How important are the words that we speak? I believe that the word of the Lord needs to be infused in our souls.

Vs 8-9 Isaiah saw the Lord and recognized his own imperfections in contrast to the Lord.

How important are the words that we speak? I believe that the word of the Lord needs to be infused in our souls.

Ephraim and Syria wage war against Judah—Christ will be born of a virgin—Compare Isaiah 7. About 559–545 B.C.

Vs 3 The Lord gives Isaiah assignments as part of his mission in the following verses.

Vs 10-13

Look for the Savior in 17:14. What does this verse teach you about Him?

14 Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign—Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil and to choose the good.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/18?lang=eng

Christ will be as a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense—Seek the Lord, not peeping wizards—Turn to the law and to the testimony for guidance—Compare Isaiah 8. About 559–545 B.C.

Vs 3 This is Messianic. Both Mary and Isaiah's wife had a child.

Vs 11-13 Do not get caught up in the thinking of the people of the day. Look to the Lord.

No politician can fix the mess the world is in. Only the healing and saving hand of the Lord will do. It is important for us to choose Him to be our God and our King.

Look for the Savior in 18:14–15. What do these verses teach you about Him?

Vs 14-17 Focus on Jesus Christ. He will be your sanctuary.

Vs 18-20 Always look to God and his prophets and not to those who are in it for money or to manipulate the truth.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/19?lang=eng

Isaiah speaks messianically—The people in darkness will see a great light—Unto us a child is born—He will be the Prince of Peace and will reign on David’s throne—Compare Isaiah 9. About 559–545 B.C.

Vs 12,17, 21 Notice throughout the chapter and the scriptures that even though we provoke the Lord to anger, his mercy is everlasting and His hand is still outstretched to save us when we ask.

Look for the Savior in 22:2. What does this verses teach you about Him?

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also has become my salvation.
