A Mighty Change
Book of Mormon Videos https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/videos-and-images/book-of-mormon-videos?lang=eng
How has a speaker’s words given you a desire to change your life?
Mosiah 4:2 King Benjamin taught the people about the wonderful blessings available to them through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. They believed him, and they prayed that they might receive this gift. They recognized their dependence upon the Lord.
Mosiah 5:2 These people believed and repented, and the Spirit gave them a mighty change of heart, so that they had no desire to do anything evil.
Mosiah 5:5 As a result of their belief and faith in Jesus Christ, they covenanted to always do the Father’s will and to keep His commandments.
Will how allow King Benjamin’s words to have the same effect on you?
For kids:
Repentance brings joy.
Mosiah 4:1–3, 10
Do a comparison exercise. Have the children get their hands very dirty or sticky, or even their bodies. Ask them how they felt after they washed clean.
Mosiah 4:1–3 King Benjamin’s people were so thankful to receive the Lord’s help and to have their guilt taken and to feel His cleansing Spirit and loving embrace.
Bear your testimony of Jesus’s love and atonement, and how it feels to be made clean.
Mosiah
4:1–3, 10 How did King Benjamin’s people repent? The believed
in Jesus Christ and His mission, so they prayed to the Father to receive His
mercy and be cleansed by His atoning blood.
The Spirit came upon them and they were filled with happiness and joy. They
were forgiven. We can be forgiven too. We need to believe in Jesus Christ, and
we need to believe that we must repent to receive the blessings of forgiveness
and progression.
Through Jesus Christ, I can receive and retain a
remission of my sins.
Mosiah 4
How can we receive and then retain a remission of our sins?
Look at notes in chapter 4 below.
Vs 11-12 Remember Jesus's
greatness, and remain humble. Live in thanksgiving and prayer, and you will
retain a remission of your sins.
Mosiah 3:19
Put off the natural man, and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Trust
the Lord as a child trusts His father, with humility, patience, and
submissiveness.
verse 27
Do things in wisdom and order. We need to follow the Spirit and serve according
to our ability to do so.
Mosiah 4:26
We are all beggars. We all must rely on the atonement of Jesus Christ for our
happiness, growth, salvation, and exaltation. We cannot make it without Him. He
is our Advocate with the Father.
Because the Lord is my Help and Salvation, I should commit to helping others.
Who need my help? How can I help?
I believe and trust in God.
Mosiah 4:5–10 What are some reasons to trust
in God?
Vs 9: Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both
in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in
heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which
the Lord can comprehend.
10 And again, believe that ye must repent of your sins and forsake them, and humble yourselves before God; and ask in sincerity of heart that he would forgive you; and now, if you believe all these things see that ye do them.

Mosiah 4:1–3
We can all have experiences in exercising faith in Jesus Christ and being
forgiven.
How are you developing a relationship with the Savior?
Vs 6 Are you trusting the Savior with your daily concerns, your desires, your wants, your fears, you joys? You need to do better about remembering that His mission is to save you, even from yourself sometimes. Have faith in Him, repent, keep His commandments, and be faithful to Him.
Think about your own experiences with the Lord? How and when have you felt His love, his compassion, understanding, and forgiveness? What can you do currently to deepen your relationship with Him?
God the Father (read later)
For kids:
The gospel of Jesus Christ inspires me to treat others
with love and kindness.
Mosiah 4:12–26
Allow children to share times the
remember when they’ve served someone and how it made them feel. We feel good
when we serve.
What might keep us
from wanting to serve? Lack of confidence, fear, not knowing how, worrying
about what others might think, lack of time, lack of interest
How could you invite
someone to help you serve? (Look for ideas in Mosiah 4:16–26.
See notes in chapter 4 below.)
Mosiah 4:12 When we receive forgiveness through our faith in Jesus Christ, our love increases and we want others to experience the joy we feel. I’ve felt that.
Mosiah 4:13–16, 26 If we want to retain a remission of our sins, then we need to be willing to give to those in need.
How can you show love and kindness to members of your
family, to friends at school, to people in primary?
I must watch my thoughts, words, and deeds.
Mosiah 4:29–30
Mosiah 4:29–30 If we want to stay on the covenant path that leads to Eternal Life, we need to watch our thoughts, words, and deeds, keep our faith centered on Jesus Christ, and observe the commandments of God.
How do your thoughts, words, and deeds affect yourself and others? How do they affect your relationship with God? How do you watch yourself?
All of my blessings come from Heavenly Father. The Spirit
of the Lord can cause a mighty change in my heart.
Mosiah 5:1–5
While Heavenly Father gave us life and created us to begin
with, He also gave us agency, and the ability to change, improve, refine, and
redefine ourselves. As we seek to follow Him and His Son, the Spirit can help
us have a mighty change of heart. We are also creators, and with proper
perspective and planning, we can progress and become better.
How can the Spirit of the Lord help us have a mighty change in our hearts?
Mosiah 5:1–5 We can know that the word of God is true through application. As we learn to hearken and be obedient, the Spirit will help us overcome any desire to do evil. As we enter into the covenant path and continue forward on it, we can always be led by the Spirit.
Ezekiel 36:26–27 26 A new heart also
will I give you,
and a new spirit will
I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out
of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within
you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and
do them.
Alma 5:14
14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have
ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances?
Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?
I am thankful for feeling that change working in me. I am thankful for seeing His image in the countenances of righteous people.

The People of King Benjamin Make a Covenant: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/video/2020-03-0150-the-people-of-king-benjamin-make-a-covenant-mosiah-5?lang=eng
I take upon myself the name of Christ as I make covenants with Him.
Mosiah 5:5–15
Mosiah 5:7–9 When we have faith in Jesus Christ, repent, partake of the sacrament, are baptized, and keep following His plan, we are constantly progressing to become like Him. Through covenant, we become His sons and daughters, and His Spirit will help us become like Him when we choose the right.
Moroni 4–5 When we covenant to always remember Him, and when we do remember Him all throughout the week, He keeps His promise, and we are blessed to always have His Spirit to be with us.
Are you willing to take upon yourself His name? Do you feel His Spirit with you? How do you know you belong to the Savior? Do you feel safe when you feel His presence?
For kids:
As I make covenants with
God, I take upon myself the name of Christ.
How can we wear Jesus’s name in our hearts? (Children can color a badge with His name on it.)
Mosiah 5:12
12 I say unto you, I would that ye should remember to retain the name written always in your hearts, that
ye are not found on the left hand of God, but that ye hear and know the voice
by which ye shall be called, and also, the name by which he shall call you.
Unfortunately, those who were children when King Benjamin gave his address fell
away. How can we help our children and grandchildren know and love Jesus and
want to enter in and stay on the covenant path?
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/mosiah/4?lang=eng
King Benjamin continues his address—Salvation
comes because of the Atonement—Believe in God to be saved—Retain a remission of
your sins through faithfulness—Impart of your substance to the poor—Do all
things in wisdom and order. About 124 B.C.
Heading: This heading
sums up some things that we need to do to more fully be living the gospel of
Jesus Christ.
Vs 2-3 When the conviction of the word reaches our hearts and we in
sincerity reach out for the Lord to heal and save us, He will immediately be
there to save us.
Are we being fed this way in our meetings? Are people testifying
of Jesus Christ, so the Spirit can bear witness? Am I testifying of Jesus
Christ?
Vs 4 King Benjamin was a good leader that loved his
people. This put me in mind of Bishop Lomenick and the love he had for the
people in 2nd Ward. Because of his love for us, and his invitations for us to
live the gospel, his ward members wanted to do the things he asked and to
please him; and to please the Lord.
Vs 6-8 When we
have repented and made covenants through baptism, if we continue in faith until
the end, we will be saved. Salvation comes through Faith in Jesus Christ and
following His commandments, and there is not any other way that we can retain
this gift.
Vs 9-10 Learn to believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, and then when you
believe, practice your belief.
We need to be humble enough to recognize the magesty of God: that
He is all powerful, all knowing, all seeing, all loving. We need to recognize
that we have need of His grace, found in the atonement of His Son Jesus Christ.
We need to undertand that our own understanding and perceptions are very
limited. We need to acknowledge our utter dependance upon Him.
Also, as we repent and keep covenants with HIm, we will recognize
and feel that we are His children, and that it is His good pleasure to give
unto us His kingdom. Is it our good pleasure to receive it? We are not equal to
Him, but He has provided the way that we can become like Him. He wants us to
inherit Eternal Life. In order to do so, we need to be submissive to Him and
grateful for the Gift of His Son.
Vs 11-12 Remember Jesus's greatness, and remain humble.
Live in thanksgiving and prayer, and you will retain a remission of your sins.
Vs 13-15 Christian’s have a
duty to treat each other well and to rear their children in righteousness.
Vs 16 Christians also have a duty to minister. Learn
how to minister. Follow the Spirit and give as the Lord would have you do.
Vs 26-27 In order to retain a remission of your sins, it
is important that you do ministering.
Vs 30 Always remember the
Lord and strive to live to have His Spirit and His blessings with you.

The Saints become the sons and daughters of
Christ through faith—They are then called by the name of Christ—King Benjamin
exhorts them to be steadfast and immovable in good works. About 124 B.C.
Vs 2-5 True conversion, born of
faith in Jesus Christ, leads to repentance and a change of heart. Lasting
conversion is found in making and keeping sacred covenants.
Vs 6-7 The waters of baptism represent our rebirth as sons and daughters
of Jesus Christ.
We are born of God and become His sons and daughters through
following the doctrine of Christ: Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; repentance of
our sins; baptism by immersion and then partaking of the sacrament; receiving
the gift of the Holy Ghost and then following the Spirit and living our lives
with Him as our guide; enduring in faith to the end, and then receiving eternal
life.
Vs 8-9 Jesus is the only way to freedom and salvation.
We need to take upon ourselves His name.
Vs 11 No one can erase this
name from our hearts. It will be there and abide with us. The only way that it
is removed is through personal transgression. Jesus will stay with us in our
hearts, unless we choose to erase Him.
Vs 12-14 Keep the name of Jesus always in your heart. Learn to hear and
know His voice. Give yourself to Him and be His.
Jesus cannot claim those who have not chosen Him as their
Redeemer.
Vs 15 Determine and now and daily to remember Jesus and
remain firm in your testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

King Benjamin records the names of the people and
appoints priests to teach them—Mosiah reigns as a righteous king. About 124–121 B.C.
Vs 2 Everyone that was
accountable entered into a covenant with God and took upon themselves the name
of Jesus Christ, because of the teachings of King Benjamin.
