What are we encouraged to remember, since we have the record of Helaman speaking to his sons?

Helaman 5:5–14 Remember Jesus Christ your Redeemer, to keep the commandments, your ancestors, and the words of the prophets.

Helaman 10:4 The Lord is pleased with Nephi and has blessed him because he did remember.

Nephi has worked tirelessly to help his people remember.

Helaman 7:20 With all the blessings that the Nephites received, with all the blessings that the citizens of The United States of America have received, how could they and we forget; and yet so many have. Don’t ever forget.

20 O, how could you have forgotten your God in the very day that he has delivered you?

Because of Nephi’s righteousness, the Lord had given him the sealing power. He used everything within the power of his faith to help bring the people back to the Lord: preaching, praying, performing miracles, a famine.

Distractions can take us away from God, and then we can easily forget. When we partake of the sacrament, we not only promise to remember Him, but we also should be seeking to bridle our passions and be better disciples.

Helaman 7:21 The vain things of this world have no power to save us or to love and bless us. Worldly power and money pale to the riches God has in store for the faithful.

21 But behold, it is to get gain, to be praised of men, yea, and that ye might get gold and silver. And ye have set your hearts upon the riches and the vain things of this world, for the which ye do murder, and plunder, and steal, and bear false witness against your neighbor, and do all manner of iniquity.

We’re in this mess in our Country here and now. Today, 13 July 2024, an assassination attempt was made on President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. He is running for office against the current president, President Biden.

Helaman 12:2 Our Country has been so richly blessed, but there are those who love money and power and division more than they love God, the truth, and their fellowmen. So we have Gadianton Robbers again in our land.

Helaman 7:17 We need to remember that it is not too late to remember the Lord and to return unto the Lord.

17 O repent ye, repent ye! Why will ye die? Turn ye, turn ye unto the Lord your God. Why has he forsaken you?

The Lord has not forsaken us. Have we forsaken Him?

Prophets reveal the will of God to the people.
Helaman 7–11

These chapters show us Nephi’s interactions with the Lord as his prophet. We can learn what prophets do here.

How does Nephi’s ministry help you understand the role of prophets? (See notes in scripture chapters below.)

After reading these chapters, you can answer the following question:

What is a prophet and what does he do?

Prophet

Follow the Living Prophet

How bold is Nephi in Helaman 7:11–29? (See notes below)

Why do prophets, and even parents and missionaries, sometimes have to speak with boldness?

In The Prophet of God, read the following section:

Don’t Be Surprised

How has the Lord blessed you through the ministry of His prophets?

What are some recent teachings from President Nelson?

What are you personally doing to listen and to follow the Lord’s directions at this time?

Prophets

For kids:

The Lord wants me to remember Him.
Helaman 7:20–21

Share an experience of a time you forgot something; allow the children to do this as well.

Read Helaman 7:20–21

20 O, how could you have forgotten your God in the very day that he has delivered you?

21 But behold, it is to get gain, to be praised of men, yea, and that ye might get gold and silver. And ye have set your hearts upon the riches and the vain things of this world, for the which ye do murder, and plunder, and steal, and bear false witness against your neighbor, and do all manner of iniquity.

What do you think it means to forget God?

Have you ever forgotten to do something your parents have asked you to do? What were the consequences?

Do you think Heavenly Father is disappointed when we forget to pray to Him and forget to follow His Spirit and His commandments?

What things can we do to make sure that we remember Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?

For kids:

Prophets testify of Jesus Christ.
Helaman 8:13–23

Helaman 8:13–23 Who are some of the prophets who taught about Jesus Christ? Moses, Abraham, Zenos, Zenock, Ezias, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zedekiah, Mulek, Lehi, Nephi, and many more.

What had President Nelson taught us about Jesus Christ?

Follow the Prophet

Choose a phrase from each verse to write on a footstep; then follow those footsteps to a picture of the Savior as you sing the song.

How does following the prophet lead us to Jesus Christ?

My faith in Jesus Christ must be built on more than signs and miracles.
Helaman 910:1, 12–15

Our eyes and our ears can deceive us. We must ever desire to have the Holy Ghost to be with us to witness the truth. Our Faith in Jesus Christ should prompt us to keep His commandments, so that we can have His Spirit to be with us.

Nephi gave the people a lot of signs in Helaman 9, but most the people talked them away. Signs do not convert.

Pay attention to the way different people reacted to miracles they witnessed in chapters 9 and 10. How did the five witnesses and the judges act differently in Helaman 9:1–20 Also, look at Helaman 9:39–4110:12–15 (See notes below.)

How should and can you build your faith in Jesus Christ?

3 Nephi 1:22 There are always those who will talk away and around truth and entice others to not believe. Be among the believing. Even now. Know that the arm of the Lord will be revealed in these last days, and you will witness great miracles. Have the Spirit with you, so that you can discern truth from error.

2:1–2. If we forget signs and wonders, what really has happened is that we’ve moved away from our covenants and our testimony in the Lord and forgotten Him. No wonder we are told so many times throughout the scriptures to remember.

For kids:

Pondering the words of God invites revelation.
Helaman 10:1–4

Elder Klebingat told the missionaries in the California San Bernardino Mission that pondering is making connections between things that you already know and new truths that you are learning.

Ponder: “To meditate and think deeply, often upon the scriptures or other things of God. When combined with prayer, pondering the things of God may bring revelation and understanding.” (This section has many great scriptural examples.

Ponder synonyms: consider, contemplate, deliberate, evaluate, examine, puzzle over, reflect, weigh, meditate, reason, study

Read Helaman 10:1–3 together. Do some of the synonyms help you understand pondering more?

How can you make pondering part of your scripture study, prayer time, and daily choices?

Pondering the word of God invites revelation.
Helaman 10:2–4

Helaman 10:2–4  Pondering can lead to revelation; it can also let to comforting and sustaining power from Jesus. When I am cast down, I should take time to ponder and pray. That was I can have the Lord him temper my emotions, give me peace, and inspire me to know what to do.

Serve with the Spirit President Eyring tells us, “When we ponder, we invite revelation by the Spirit.”

You need to schedule time to pray, to ponder, and to be still and know that He is God.

I will obey Heavenly Father.
Helaman 10:11–12

Helaman 10:1–12 What did Nephi do to gain the Lord’s trust? Can you see that he sought to do the Lord’s will and not his own? (See notes below.)

How can you gain the Lord’s truth?

For kids:

I will obey Heavenly Father.
Helaman 10:11–12

We can choose to be like Nephi and be obedient to Heavenly Father even when that’s difficult.

Helaman 10:2, 11–12 What did Nephi have to do?

Nephi had the experience that many missionaries do. They must testify to truth, even when people don’t want to hear it and hate them for it

What are some things the Lord might want you to do? Will you do them?

The Lord gives power to people who seek His will and strive to keep His commandments.
Helaman 10:1–12

Helaman 10:1–12 What did Nephi do to gain the Lord’s trust? Will you seek the Lord’s will instead of your own? How soon? (See notes below.)

The Lord wants me to remember Him.
Helaman 12

Do you remember important information, like birthdays of family members? What helps you remember? Does it take effort to remember those you love? Does it take effort to remember the Lord?

What are some of the reminders that you have in place to remember important anniversaries?

What reminders do you have in place to remember the Lord?

Helaman 12:5 This verse shows how easily and quickly people forget the Lord? What can you do personally to make sure that you remember Him?

Helaman 12 Make a list of why some have forgotten the Lord. Does this list include some of your own distractions? (See notes below.)

What helps you remember Jesus? What will you choose to do this week to invite the Spirit and be more faithful to Jesus?

Doctrine and Covenants 20:77, 79 Sacramental Prayers

Reverently and Meekly Now

The Prophecy of Nephi, the Son of Helaman—God threatens the people of Nephi that he will visit them in his anger, to their utter destruction except they repent of their wickedness. God smiteth the people of Nephi with pestilence; they repent and turn unto him. Samuel, a Lamanite, prophesies unto the Nephites.

Nephi is rejected in the north and returns to Zarahemla—He prays upon his garden tower and then calls upon the people to repent or perish. About 23–21 B.C.

Vs 4-6 There is, or should be, sadness in our land now for these same reasons. The Gadianton robbers are controlling the kingdoms of the world.

How does Nephi’s ministry help you understand the role of prophets?

How bold is Nephi in Helaman 7:11–29?

Vs 11-15 Prophets pray, fast, and mourned for their people. Prophets tell the people of their iniquities and command them to repent.

Vs 16-18 Choose God and Live. Don't follow the enticements of the evil one. Be repentant. Turn to God. Don't harden your heart. Hearken to the voice of the Good Shepherd.

20 O, how could you have forgotten your God in the very day that he has delivered you?

Vs 21-22 This is a warning to governmental leaders and those who buy privileges from them and to the citizens of our Country. We need to put God and the welfare of each other first!

Helaman 7:17–22: Prophets cry repentance and warn of the consequences of sin.

Vs 23-25 Unless we repent and keep our covenants, those who have not yet covenanted with the Lord will be more blessed than we are.

Vs 26-27 Beware of pride. Take heed that you don't join in with the evil that surrounds you.

Vs 28 Strict warning to the United States. Repent.

Helaman 7:29 Prophets speak the words the Lord gives them. Nephi prophesied these things according to the Spirit. Because they are the words of the Lord, they will come to pass.

Corrupt judges seek to incite the people against Nephi—Abraham, Moses, Zenos, Zenock, Ezias, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lehi, and Nephi all testified of Christ—By inspiration Nephi announces the murder of the chief judge. About 23–21 B.C.

We see corrupt leaders and media today inciting the people against those who want to do good for our Country.

Vs 6 So incredulous. They had all their lands taken by the Lamanites over and over. These people either have terrible memories or are totally dishonest, or both.

Vs 7-9 Some were smarter and did remember and recognized truth and knew they needed to repent. Even with those pot stirrers, they acknowledged they were in the wrong themselves and that Nephi was a righteous man and a prophet of God.

How does Nephi’s ministry help you understand the role of prophets?

Helaman 8:13–23:

Vs 11-12 Prophets remind the people of God’s dealings with Israel in the past. They call upon the words of other prophets. They remind them that God speaks to His prophets.

Vs 13 Prophets speak about the coming of the Messiah.

Vs 14-15 Moses taught that if we look upon the Son of God with faith and a contrite spirit, we shall live and receive eternal life.

Vs 16-20 Moses and Abraham, Zenos, Zenock, Ezias, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lehi, and Nephi all testified of Christ. Zenos and Zenock were prophets that lived after the days of Abraham!

Vs 20 The destruction of Jerusalem proved that the words of the prophet Jeremiah were verified; so there was no reason to believe his prophecy concerning the Son of God would not also be verified. When prophets speak the word of God through the power of God, those words come to pass.

Vs 21-23 Remember the words of the prophets and how they point you to Jesus Christ. Be believing, and be gratiful for the power of the atonement and rejoice in His day which came and His day which is to come. Our redemption is through and because of Him.

Messengers find the chief judge dead at the judgment seat—They are imprisoned and later released—By inspiration Nephi identifies Seantum as the murderer—Nephi is accepted by some as a prophet. About 23–21 B.C.

Nephi gave the people a lot of signs in Helaman 9, but most the people talked them away. Signs do not convert. Pay attention to the way different people reacted to miracles they witnessed in chapters 9 and 10.

How did the five witnesses and the judges act differently in Helaman 9:1–20

Vs 2-3 The five didn't think that God told Nephi this prophesy, but they determined that they would believe if they found the chief judge dead as Nephi had said.

They found him dead in his own blood.

Vs 4-5 When they was they believed, and they feared the other things Nephi spoke would also happen.

Learn to seek and listen to the Voice of the Spirit now, before you find yourself convinced by powerful demonstrations that of necessity force your humility.

Vs 16-17 The judges knew those five didn't commit the murder; but, they imagined that Nephi had someone kill him, so that he could make himself look like a prophet.

They determined to question him and make him confess.

Vs 19-20 The five witnesses were liberated; they rebuked the judges one by one and they stood up for Nephi.

The judges ignored their testimony. They wanted to catch him and have cause to kill him.

How does Nephi’s ministry help you understand the role of prophets?

9:21–36; Also, look at Helaman 9:39–41:

Vs 22 Nephi taught repentance.

Vs 23 Nephi had the gift of seership.

There is a great need for repentance. Just like at this time, there were many deceivers who were lying in wait to destroy a man of God, there is today. There are many who call good evil and evil good, and there will come a day when such who have not repented will wish they had.

Vs 25-36 Nephi provides another sign. He knows that Seezoram murdered his brother Seantum.

As they example Seezoram, he will confess his murder. His testimony will verify that Nephi's words are true, that he's an honest man, and that he was sent from God.

Vs 38 Afte Seezoram's confessin, the five were set at liberty and also Nehi was. (Could these judges have been complicit with Seezoram?)

Vs 39-41 Some believed Nephi, some believed because of the five; some thought Nephi was a prophet, others that he was a God.

The Lord gives Nephi the sealing power—He is empowered to bind and loose on earth and in heaven—He commands the people to repent or perish—The Spirit carries him from multitude to multitude. About 21–20 B.C.

Helaman 10:1–12 What did Nephi do to gain the Lord’s trust? Can you see that he sought to do the Lord’s will and not his own? Will you seek the Lord’s will instead of your own? How soon? How does Nephi’s ministry help you understand the role of prophets? Helaman 10:4–7, 11–12:

Vs 2-3 Nephi spent much of his time in pondering the things of God and the condition of his people.

Vs 3-4 The Lord blessed Nephi because Nephi delared His word with unwearyingness, and he didn't fear them, nor did he fear losing his life; the Lord blessed Nephi because he sought to do His will and keep His commandment.

Because Nephi took the time to ponder, the Lord revealed these things to him.

Vs 5-11 Because of Nephi's faithfulness, the Lord will bless him forever. He trusted him so completely, knowing that Nephi would never choose anything contrary to the Lord's will. So he gave him blessings and promised in the presence of angels. Nephi would have power over the elements. He would have sealing power. He would have power to deliver the word of God, and He was commanded to cry repentance, or the people would face destruction.

Vs 12 Nephi was so trustworthy, that he didn't go home, but returned straightway to the people to tell them the words of the Lord and to preach repentance.

Pay attention to the way different people reacted to miracles they witnessed in 10:12–15

Vs 13-15 Even though the people knew that Nephi told them the truth concerning the chief judge's death at the hand of his brother, they hardened their hearts and wouldn't liste to Nephi.

He repeated the word of the Lord, that they must repent or be destroyed. They still hardened their hearts and wouldn't repent. They sought to lay their hands on him and cast him into prison.

Vs 16-18 The power of God was with Nephi. They couldn't cast him into prison; the Spirit conveyed him away out of the midst of them.

Nephi went from one mulitude to another, until he declared the word of God to all the people.

THey wouldn't hearken. They became unruly and began to slay each other. They were bringing desturciotn upon themselves.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/hel/11?lang=eng

Nephi persuades the Lord to replace their war with a famine—Many people perish—They repent, and Nephi importunes the Lord for rain—Nephi and Lehi receive many revelations—The Gadianton robbers entrench themselves in the land. About 20–6 B.C.

How does Nephi’s ministry help you understand the role of prophets?

Vs 4-5 Nephi was given this sealing power, because the Lord knew he wouldn't ask contrary to His will. Changing the pattern of destruction from war to famine gave the people the opportunity to be humbled and repent.

Nephi never abused this power. He didn't want any harm to come to his people. Rather, he wanted to help bring about their repentance, so they wouldnt' be destroyed.

Vs 7-8 Destruction helped the people remember the Lord and the words of the prophets. Please remember Jesus even when things are going well.

They accepted Nephi as a prophet and wanted him to ask God to stop the famine.

Vs 10-16 Nephi gives us a pattern of prayer here. He also was humbled in petitioning the Lord and gained more faith as his prayer continued. What are you doing to pray for your own salvation and for the salvation of all those around you and throughout the world. The pattern of pray would be to start praying and keep praying. Let the Lord direct you thinking, your judgment, and your prayers.

Because the people repented, Nephi asked the Lord to stop the famine and send rain.

Vs 17-20 The people were blessed according to their faith, repentance, and desires for good. They got rid of the band of robbers (at least for a while) and they had respect for a prophet of God; they had rain and the food they needed sent from God; they built up places that had been destroyed. They had peace.

Vs 21 Peace accompanied there repentance and the humility they had in being given the ability to eat and live again.

Vs 32-34 After a few years, the Gadiantan Robbers became even more numerous and destructive.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/hel/12?lang=eng

Men are unstable and foolish and quick to do evil—The Lord chastens His people—The nothingness of men is compared with the power of God—In the day of judgment, men will gain everlasting life or everlasting damnation. About 6 B.C.

Helaman 12 Make a list of why some have forgotten the Lord. Does this list include some of your own distractions?

1.      Prosperity

2.      Security

3.      When things are easy

4.      Foolish choices, slow to walk in wisdom’s path

5.      Enticed by iniquity, listen to evil one

6.      Pride

7.      Boastful, braggart, arrogant

8.      Don’t trust God, though He loves them, they don’t want Him to rule over them

9.      Don’t listen to God’s counsels, don’t follow Him, won’t have him to be their guide

10.   Disobedient

11.

Vs 3 This is a sad commentary on human nature. We need to learn to put off the natural man and trust in God.

Vs 22-25 he Lord gives us every opportunity to repent. But we have to choose it. Oh, grant salvation.
