3 Nephi 17:1 How would you have felt if Jesus had visited and ministered to you, allowing you to see, hear, and touch Him, and feel His Spirit; and, then He told you that it was time for Him to go?
He knew He needed to return to His Father, and these people needed time to ponder on the things he taught them. He promised He’d return the next day, and told them it was time for them to go home; but, they didn’t leave. 3 Nephi 17:5 Jesus knew that they were hoping He’d stay a little longer.
Because of their faith, and because of Jesus’s love for them, He granted their desire.
3 Nephi 17:16–17 The blessings they received as He prayed and as He taught them were great and marvelous.
3 Nephi 17:20 Afterwards Jesus said, “Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full.” This time was important and enriching to Jesus as well.
3 Nephi 17 was my mother’s favorite chapter of scripture.

This video was so beautiful. Jesus was visibly touched after He prayed with and for the people. His joy was full. And then he said, “Behold, you little ones.” And angels came down to minister to them. These were both men and women, and they hugged and loved the children. I got the impression from watching this that they were all family, ancestors to this people, and there was recognition, even with the littlest ones. This was powerful. (See Facebook post below.)
Read from 3 Nephi 17
verses 7 Jesus’s love and compassion know no bounds. “Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels are filled with mercy.”
20–25 The account in the shown in the video: 20 And they arose from the earth, and he said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full.
21 And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them.
22 And when he had done this he wept again;
23 And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones.
24 And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them.
25 And the multitude did see and hear and bear record; and they know that their record is true for they all of them did see and hear, every man for himself; and they were in number about two thousand and five hundred souls; and they did consist of men, women, and children.
Draw a picture of yourself with Jesus. How has Jesus shown His love for you? How have you felt His love?
The Savior
is my perfect example of ministering.
3 Nephi 17; 18:24–25,
28–32
Even with 2,500 people
present, Jesus ministered to them one by one. How can I help people feel more
important? How can I be more present in the moment and attentive to the needs
of others and things of the Spirit?
Notice the way that He
ministered in the following verses: 3 Nephi 17; 18:24–25, 28–32 What needs did He minister
to? What attributes made His ministering effective? (See notes below.)
How does He minister to you?
What can you do to improve your ministering? Look people in the eye and
concentrate and what is being said. Yield your heart to the Spirit so you can
understand the messages you are receiving and know how to respond.

For kids:
I
can think about Jesus when I take the sacrament.
3 Nephi
18:1–12
What happens during the Sacrament? What do we do? (Talk about the hymn and the prayers, and what happens after each.)
Read 3 Nephi 18:1–12 together. Ask the children to listen as you read and to raise their hands when they hear familiar things that we do when we partake of the sacrament.
What does Jesus want us to do while we partake of the
sacrament? What should we do all the time?
The answers are found in these verses: 3 Nephi 18:7, 11
I
can be filled with the Spirit as I take the sacrament.
3 Nephi
18:1–12
What can you do to ensure that you take the sacrament with full purpose of heart, and not allow it to just be a casual routine?
3 Nephi 18:1–12 How can you be spiritually filled each time you take the sacrament? The multitude that were with Jesus were given the sacrament by the leaders whom He had chosen. They took first and then gave to the multitude. Every ate and drank, and they were filled.
Certainly a piece of bread and a sip of water will not
satisfy your physical hunger. How were they filled? They were filled through
their faith in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Ghost. They were filled
with hope and a determination to continue to follow Jesus and keep His
commandments. They were filled with a newness of life and a resolve to serve
others and become like Jesus. They were determined to live the two great commandments.
They were forgiven, with guilt swept away and with room for growth, power, and
improvement.
Feasts take preparation. It is no different with the sacrament of the Lord’s
Supper. How we prepare will determine whether we are filled, or with it was a
holy experience for us. These people had the Lord with them. They had felt the
prints of the nails in his hands and his feet and the hollow in His side from
the sword. They felt His love and adored Him. They were humbled by His mercy
and His grace, and they were prepared to covenant with Him and follow Him. This
bread and water (wine) was life to them.
verses 5–7, 11 The sacrament should always be given to members of Christ’s Church who believe in Him. We should take the bread in remembrance of His body and the water in remembrance of His blood, as a testimony to the Father that we always do remember Jesus. The leaders of the Church who’ve been given authority should always provide the sacrament to those who repent and are baptized in Jesus’s name.
3 Nephi 20:1–9 Even though the disciples had not brought bread or wine, Jesus again gave them the sacrament. He is the sacred memory. The emblems we take are in remembrance of Him.
Are you allowing the sacrament to accomplish its purpose in your life? Are you receiving fully the gift of the Savior’s atonement for you? Why is the sacrament sacred to you?
Always Remember Him President Henry B. Eyring gave “three suggestions about what you could remember each week when you partake of the sacred emblems of the sacrament.”
“How is the Savior’s sacrifice influencing my daily life?” “What am I doing well as His disciple, and what can I improve?”
Matthew 26:26–28 26 ¶ And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Allow time to ponder. Sometimes, studying the scriptures becomes a blend of reading, praying, and pondering. When you allow quiet time to reflect and speak with God about what you are learning, you can increase the power of His word in your life.
The
Savior taught me how to pray.
3 Nephi
17:13–22; 18:15–25; 19:6–9,
15–36
How does it make you feel to know that Jesus has and does
pray for you? Can you imagine what it must have been like for these people to
kneel and pray with Jesus and to hear Him pray to the Father for them? How
would you feel hearing Jesus pray for you?
How have you felt when you have heard your parents praying for you? How have
you felt when you have heard the prophet, one of the apostles, your Stake
President or the Bishop, pray for you or pronounce blessings upon you?
How does knowing that Jesus has prayed for these people and for you and your people make you feel? Will you allow Jesus’s prayers for you to influence how you pray? As you read the following verses, consider what you learn from Jesus’s example and teaching about prayer: 3 Nephi 17:13–22; 18:15–25; and 19:6–9, 15–36. (Also consider How, when, where, and for whom should you pray? Why should you prayer? Why prayer?): (See notes below.)
Doctrine and Covenants 10:5 5 Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work.
For kids:
The
Savior taught me how to pray.
3 Nephi
18:15–24; 19:6–9,
15–36
Why do we pray?
Read 3 Nephi 18:18–21 18 Behold,
verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter
into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you
as wheat.
19 Therefore
ye must always pray unto the Father in my name;
20 And whatsoever ye
shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall
receive, behold it shall be given unto you.
21 Pray in
your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your
children may be blessed.
What did Jesus teach us
about prayer? How have your family prayers been a blessing to you? How do you
feel when you pray? How have your personal prayers helped you feel comfort,
direction, and courage?
Scripture treasure hunt:
Hide the following verses: 3 Nephi 18:15; 3 Nephi 18:20; 3 Nephi 18:21; 3 Nephi 19:9;
and 3 Nephi 19:23.
Read them together and
discuss what Jesus and His disciples taught about prayer.
3 Nephi 18:15 15 Verily,
verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be
tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him.
3 Nephi 18:20 20 And whatsoever ye
shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall
receive, behold it shall be given unto you.
3 Nephi 18:21 21 Pray in
your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your
children may be blessed.
3 Nephi 19:9 9 And
they did pray for that which they most desired; and they desired that
the Holy Ghost should be given unto them.
3 Nephi 19:23 23 And
now Father, I pray unto thee for them, and also for all those who
shall believe on their words, that they may believe in me, that I may be in
them as thou, Father, art in me, that we may be one.
I
can “hold up” the light of Jesus Christ.
3 Nephi
18:22–25
If someone knew nothing
about Jesus Christ, except that you were a were a Christian, what would that
person think of Jesus Christ?
3 Nephi 18:24 What does
it mean to hold up your light to let it shine before the world? We need to
remember that Jesus is the light that we should hold up. He is the standard. We
are His standard bearers.
3 Nephi 18:22–25 Jesus
wants us to hold up our light, or hold Him up before the world. We need to be
inviting to everyone, and those who want to come and see, we need to love and
support and nurture with patience.
Disciples
of Jesus Christ seek the gift of the Holy Ghost.
3 Nephi
18:36–37; 19:6–22
What do your own prayers
teach you about your deepest desires? Is your relationship with the Lord deep
enough that you are expressing your desires? Do you trust Him? Do you confide
in Him?
3 Nephi 19:9 9 And they did
pray for that which they most desired; and they desired that the Holy
Ghost should be given unto them.
After being with Jesus and
feeling His love, this is the gift that they most wanted. Are you praying for
the Holy Ghost to be with you? You should be. What things are you doing to ask
for His presence and to be ready and worthy for it?

on video
I just watched this Book of Mormon: Another Testament of
Jesus Christ video. I hadn't seen it before, but it left me in happy tears. After
His resurrection, Jesus appeared to the people in the Americas. In this scene,
He knelt down and prayed with the people and for the people. Arising
afterwards, He said, "Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now
behold, my joy is full."
This video was so beautiful. Jesus was visibly touched after He prayed with and
for the people. His joy was full. And then he said, “Behold, you little ones.”
And angels came down to minister to them. These were both men and women, and
they hugged and loved the children. I got the impression from watching this
that they were all family, ancestors to this people, and there was recognition,
even with the littlest ones. This was powerful.
I think this will be repeated with power and glory when Jesus returns to the earth
again. I can testify that my own spirit can see, feel, and understand things
beyond my own comprehension; and I look forward to being a part of a scene like
this one.
Please watch. Our hope and our glory is in Jesus:

Jesus directs the people to ponder His words and pray for understanding—He heals their sick—He prays for the people, using language that cannot be written—Angels minister to and fire encircles their little ones. About A.D. 34.
Notice the way that He
ministered in this chapter: 3 Nephi 17. What needs did He minister
to? What attributes made His ministering effective?
He ministered with great love. He felt with the
people both their joys and their sorrows. He was one with them, and they were
with Him. His bowels were filled with mercy. He blessed them because of their
faith in Him. Love made his ministering effective.
Vs 1-4 The multitude must
have been exhausted, because Jesus thought to give them some rest and asked
them to prepare for the morrow, when He'd come back again.
Vs 7 The people were
tearful. They didn’t want Jesus to leave.
Vs 6-8 Jesus tarried longer
with them and invited them to bring whoever and any infirmitives forward and
He'd heal them. If you choose to tarry with Jesus, He will heal you too.
Vs 9-11 He healed all the
sick. Then He commanded the children to be brought so that He could bless them.
Vs 17 Jesus prayed to the
Father for all the people, with words that could not be recorded.
Vs 21-25 Jesus blessed the
children, and then angels also came down to encircle and bless them. Two
thousand five hundred souls witnessed this.
How does knowing that Jesus has prayed for these people and for you and your people make you feel? Will you allow Jesus’s prayers for you to influence how you pray? As you read the following verses, consider what you learn from Jesus’s example and teaching about prayer. (Also consider How, when, where, and for whom should you pray? Why should you prayer? Why prayer?):

Jesus institutes the sacrament among the Nephites—They
are commanded to pray always in His name—Those who eat His flesh and drink His
blood unworthily are damned—The disciples are given power to confer the Holy
Ghost. About A.D. 34.
Vs 3-12 Jesus
teaches about the sacrament and trains his leaders how to administer the
ordinances to the congregations of His Church.
Vs 13-14 We will be
blessed if we follow the commandments that Jesus has given us of His Father.
Those who choose to set up their own patterns for principles and ordinances of
the gospel aren't built upon His rock, but upon a sandy foundation.
Vs 15-16 We need to be vigilant in prayer so that we will not be led away from the God we love. We also need to pray for those in our Church that they will be strong in keeping the commandments.
Notice the way that He
ministered in the following verses: 18:24–25, 28–32 What needs did He minister
to? What attributes made His ministering effective?
18 Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray
always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you,
that he may sift you as wheat.
19 Therefore
ye must always pray unto the Father in my name;
20 And whatsoever ye
shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall
receive, behold it shall be given unto you.
Vs 21-23 When, where, why,
how, with whom we should pray. Prayer is important. We should pray always and
follow the Spirit in what we pray for and what we do. The Lord will answer our
prayers. We need to pray and minister to those who are struggling.
Vs
24-25 Be a light to the world. Jesus is the Light to hold up. He is our
standard. We need to love others as He has loved us and do His works among the
people, inviting all to come unto Him (and to us).
Vs 32 The
Bishop and those in leadership are to oversee the Sacrament and not permit
those who are unworthy to partake of it. But all are invited to participate in
our sacrament meetings, and we are to pray for them and nourish them and help
them understand the word of God. We are to help them on the covenant path so
that they too may repent, partake, and be brought to salvation.
Vs 33-34 It
was necessary for Jesus to clarify the commandments and the ordinances, so that
there would be no more disputations.
Vs 35-39 Jesus
gave His disciples the power to bestow the Gift of the Holy Ghost before he
ascended back to His Father in Heaven.
How does knowing that Jesus has prayed for these people and
for you and your people make you feel? Will you allow Jesus’s prayers for you
to influence how you pray? As you read the following verses, consider what you
learn from Jesus’s example and teaching about prayer. (Also consider How, when,
where, and for whom should you pray? Why
should you prayer? Why prayer?):
18:15–25:

The twelve disciples minister unto the people and pray
for the Holy Ghost—The disciples are baptized and receive the Holy Ghost and
the ministering of angels—Jesus prays using words that cannot be written—He
attests to the exceedingly great faith of these Nephites. About A.D. 34.
Vs 1-3 Throughout
the night, more people were alerted that Jesus had come and people were
traveling on through the night to be there the next day.
Vs 4-8 Jesus taught
his disciples, and they taught the multitudes how to pray.
Vs 9-11 The
greatest desires of the mulitudes was that they would be given the Holy Ghost,
and that's what they prayed for. Nephi was the first one to be baptized.
As you read the following verses, consider what you learn
from Jesus’s example and teaching about prayer. (Also consider How, when,
where, and for whom should you pray? Why
should you prayer? Why prayer?):
19:6–9,
15–36.
Vs 4-8 Jesus taught
his disciples, and they taught the multitudes how to pray.
Vs 9-11 The
greatest desires of the mulitudes was that they would be given the Holy Ghost,
and that's what they prayed for. Nephi was the first one to be baptized.
Vs 12-15 What a great gift it is to be baptized into the Lord's true Church, and what a spectacular thing that we can have the Holy Ghost with us. Also, angels came to minister. And Jesus stood in their midst and also ministered to them. Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost. At this time, they were expressing joy in the decisions of this righteous people.
Vs 16-18 The multitude knelt down to pray. This time they prayed to Jesus, calling Him their Lord and God. I'm sure they were expressing their thanksgiving and great joy.
Vs 19-24 How does it make you feel to know that Jesus prays for every single person who is baptized?
Vs 25-33 Jesus's joy was so great because these people had chosen to obey our Father and follow Him. He asked them to continue to pray. Then He himself went a little way off and prayed to the Father Himself, in great thanksgiving. His pray included those believers then; and they include all who choose to believe in Him. He has prayed marvelous things for us.
Vs 34-36 The wonderful outpouring of the Spirit that the Nephites experienced through their own prayers and in listening to Jesus pray was more miraculous that many of the miracles performed during His mortal life. Healing repentant hearts is the greatest miracle.
How does knowing that Jesus has prayed for these people and for you and your people make you feel? Will you allow Jesus’s prayers for you to influence how you pray?
