The teachings of Jesus Christ are meant to inspire us to become like Him. The gospel of Jesus Christ can entirely change people (see 4 Nephi). When the Savior visited the Americas, centuries of contention melted away and the people were united in all things.

4 Nephi 1:17 “…they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God.”

4 Nephi 1:3 “they had all things common among them.”

4 Nephi 1:15–16 “there could not be a happier people.”

The Lamanites and the Nephites were changed through the love of Jesus Christ and His teachings? How are you being changed through His love and through His gospel?

The Church of Jesus Christ is called in His name.
3 Nephi 27:1–12

3 Nephi 27:1–3, 3 Nephi 27:4–12 Jesus Christ personally gave the name of His church, so we should not contend over nicknames or other names. It’s always been that way. In recent years the Lord reprimanded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for continuing to embrace the title Mormon Church. We are not the Church of Mormon (and he would agree); we are the Church of Jesus Christ.

Doctrine and Covenants 115:4 The Savior revealed the name of His Church in our day.

The Correct Name of the Church

For kids:

I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ.
3 Nephi 27:3–8

How important is your name to you? Do you like it when people call you kindly by your name? Does it upset you if people call you by names that aren’t yours and that don’t define who you are? We know that we shouldn’t take the name of the Lord in vain and that we shouldn’t speak rudely to other people, by calling them mean names.

Read 3 Nephi 27:3 After Jesus had set up His Church in the Americas, the people wondered what they should call it. Do you think they should have argued over this?

Read 3 Nephi 27:5–8 What did Jesus tell the people about the name of His Church? Why do you think the name is important? (It defines that we are Christians and disciples of Jesus Christ.)

Do you belong to different groups and teams? (We are members of a family, we are in school classes, we might be on a sports team or in a reading club.) What do you like about belonging to different groups?

How do you feel about being a member (or about being baptized as a member when you are eight years old) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

The Church of Jesus Christ

Why are you thankful to belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and to carry His name?

The Church of Jesus Christ is built on His gospel.
3 Nephi 27:10–22

3 Nephi 27:10 Jesus taught that the Church must be built upon His gospel, and when it is, the Father will show forth His own works in it.

Summarize 3 Nephi 27:13–22. What does it mean for the Church to be built upon His gospel? Are you building upon His gospel as well? (See notes in chapter 27.)

3 Nephi 27:23–26 We should record the things that we are learning. For out of the records that are kept, we will be judged.

For kids:

The Church of Jesus Christ is built upon His gospel.
3 Nephi 27:13–16

The word gospel means good news.

Read 27:13–16. What is the good news in these verses? (We have been given the gospel of Jesus Christ, which teaches the plan of salvation. The Father sent Jesus Christ to be our Savior. He was lifted up on the cross so that He can lift us all up to heaven. He will judge us according to the works we did in this life. If we have faith in Him, repent and are baptized, we will be given the Holy Ghost. If we endure to the end, Jesus will hold us guiltless before His Father and we will inherit eternal life.

(Use the activity page to teach how Jesus Christ’s church is built upon His gospel.)

3 Nephi 27:30–31

Have one person hide and the rest of the class try to find Him. Have you ever been lost in a store or somewhere else? How did you feel when you were found? How did your parents and family feel?

Read 3 Nephi 27:30–31 None of these people in this generation were lost. How can we help find people now and invite them to come to Christ?

How can we help each other in our families and wards, so that none of us become lost?

“What is it that ye desire?”
3 Nephi 28:1–11

3 Nephi 28:1 How would you answer the Savior’s question to you? “What is it that ye desire of me?”

3 Nephi 28:1–11 His disciples in the Americas were righteous, yet they didn’t all have the same desire, and that’s okay.

I think my desire is to be at peace, to know that I am following the Spirit and doing the Lord’s will; and the strength and courage to get on course if I stray in actions or in thought, and then trust in Him to help me stay on the covenant path..

Are my desires changing as I strive to do His will? I hope so. I want to feel greater peace and less anxiety.

The Book of Mormon is a sign that God’s latter-day work is being fulfilled.
3 Nephi 29–30

Think about signs you recognize that forecast changes in weather or seasons.

3 Nephi 29:1–3 We can see that God’s work of gathering “is already” and continuing “to be fulfilled.”

3 Nephi 21:1–7 The coming forth of The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ and the preaching of the gospel in all the world, with many being baptized daily, is a witness to the gathering.

3 Nephi 29:4–9 The truths about the divinity of Jesus Christ, His gospel, and what is right and what is wrong are denied in our deny. It is a great comfort to have The Book of Mormon, a prophet, and to be a member of Christ’s church so that I can experience direction and peace. I am thankful for the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

4 Nephi 1:1–18 List blessings the people received. What must it have been like to live in that day? (See notes below.)

What did Jesus teach them that could have inspired their righteous choices?

3 Nephi 11:28–30 Jesus taught the people how to be baptized. He also taught them not to argue and contend with each other.

12:8–9, 21–24, 40–44 He taught them His gospel as found in the Beatitudes.

13:19–21, 28–33 He taught us to seek for Heavenly things instead of earthly treasures; and if we seek for his kingdom, He will bless us with the things that we need and desire.

14:12 He taught us to live the golden rule.

18:22–25 He taught us to invite others to come unto Him and not turn away people who want to come to Church with us.

How can you help your family, ward and community to achieve greater unity and happiness?

Why did this once Zion society fall into wickedness?

Jesus commands that the Church be called in His name—His mission and atoning sacrifice constitute His gospel—Men are commanded to repent and be baptized that they may be sanctified by the Holy Ghost—They are to be even as Jesus is. About A.D. 34–35.

Vs 1-2 Do our apostles today follow this pattern and have visitations from Jesus Christ when they have questions? Can I develop this kind of faith? Will I seek for answers through the gift and power of the Holy Ghost more often?

Vs 4-7 The Church is to be called in His Name.

Vs 8 The Church of Jesus Christ of necessity needs to be called by and in His name. We are to take upon ourselves His name. We are not Mormons or Mormon's. We are Christ's, and we are Christians.

Vs 9-12 In Churches called in Christ's name and built upon His gospel, the Father will show forth His own works in them.

Summarize 3 Nephi 27:13–22. What does it mean for the Church to be built upon His gospel? Are you building upon His gospel as well?

Vs 13-19 Jesus declared what His gospel and His doctrine is. The Father sent Jesus as the Way to lead us all back home to Him through His sacrifice and atonement. In order to be found guiltless and be permitted back into heaven, we must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of our sins, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost and endure to the end in following His gospel plan in righteousness. (Keep your covenants and think celestial.)

Vs 20-22 The commandment is for us to repent and be baptized. Jesus is the Way, and there is no other. It is through the reception of the Holy Ghost that we can be sanctified and progress to become like Him. We need to follow His example in all things and rely on Him alone for our salvation.

Vs 23-26 Keep records of spiritual things. Keep a history. Our Father in Heaven is recording everything. We wil be judged out of the things which are written.

Vs 27 Jesus tells the leaders of His church that they are judges among the people, and that in order to be effective leaders and judges, they need to follow His example and be like Him.

Also, will the things that I write stand as a witness and/or judgment in the day to come? Interesting thought.

Vs 28-29 Even though Jesus has returned to His Father, we still have full access to His grace. And if we ask of His Father in His name, we can be taught from on high through the Holy Ghost.

Vs 30-31 The Father, the Son, and holy angels all rejoice when we live righteously. Through the atonement and through our humility and righteousness in following Jesus Christ, we can all be saved.

Vs 32 Work more diligently to not sell the Savior short. Love Him more than "these".

Vs 33 Enter at the straight gate. He has defined His doctrine and His gospel many times and the ordinances are an important part in witnessing of our faith, following Him, and keeping the commandments.

Nine of the twelve disciples desire and are promised an inheritance in Christ’s kingdom when they die—The Three Nephites desire and are given power over death so as to remain on the earth until Jesus comes again—They are translated and see things not lawful to utter, and they are now ministering among men. About A.D. 34–35.

Vs 1-10 Nine of the disciples are blessed to live until at least 72 years-of-age and then return to Jesus and find rest with him. The other three are blessed to live on earth until He comes again in His glory, so that they can continue to bring souls to Him. They were all becoming like Him and His Father.

Vs 11 The mission of the Holy Ghost is important for all of us.

Vs 23 The three Nephite could go unhindered, because they were protected. They preached the gospel and brought salvation to many in that generation.

Vs 31-32 I believe that they helped at this Country's inception, and I believe they will help save this Country.

I need to start praying that this will be the case.

The coming forth of the Book of Mormon is a sign that the Lord has commenced to gather Israel and fulfill His covenants—Those who reject His latter-day revelations and gifts will be cursed. About A.D. 34–35.

Vs 1-3 We have Jesus's words from the Book or Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, the Gathering is taking place, the words of all the prophets will be fulfilled, and Jesus is coming back to the earth again. It is happening!

Vs 4-9 This is such a powerful warning. This is the state of the world today, spurning at sacred things, denying their importance, and mocking the Lord. We need to pray that we are never found doing so and for those we know are in this state of being; because there is a point where they will not be able to obtain heaven's mercy. Pray for family and friends who have lost their way and who are determined to pull others off the path.

Vs 18 A hundred and ten years of no contentions, dissensions, robbers, murderers or any other wickedness in all the land. How joyful. All were heirs to the kingdom of God.

4 Nephi 1:19–49 What attitudes and behaviors brought an end to their unity and happiness.

Vs 20 Some wanted to be Lamanites again.
During Amos's time as leader there was nearly another 84 years of peace. That's amazing.

Vs 23 The people had spread over all the land and had become exceedingly rich, because of their prosperity in Christ.

Vs 24-25 Pride returned; people wanted to outdo each other in dress and ownership; no more things in common

Vs 26-29 They had been so blessed until 200 years after Christ. So about 170 years after His death. They were wealthy because of ther faith in Jesus and their good works. But now they became prideful and divided into classes and lifted themselves up above one another.

Also they organized false churches, those that were set up to make money, and those that denied Christ. And they despised the true followers of Christ because of the miracles that happened among them.

Vs 34-35 With the passing of 230 years, the people resented and hated Christians because of the miracles among them and the blessings they received. They reviled them and persecuted them. By the next year there was a great division among the people.

The blessings that were received by the people in the Americas following Christ’s visit to them after His resurrection had to do with the covenants that they made in following the doctrine of Christ and the love of God that they carried in their hearts. There were no contentions or disputations for a long time. They had all things common. And because of their faith in Jesus Christ, there were many miracles and much prosperity.

This Zion society was achieved through love, unity, and inclusion. It wasn’t until they started letting in feelings of pride; and valuing class distinction, diversity, and contempt back into their lives, that their peace, security, and the manifestation of miracles.

This chapter of scripture is very telling and to a great extent follows the timeline of The United States of America. In verses 34-35, we find that after 230 years had passed, the majority of the people resented and hated Christians because of the miracles that were wrought among them and the blessings that were received. They reviled and persecuted the Christians. Shortly thereafter, there was a great division among all the people.

Vs 42 Just as the Gadianton Robbers brought about the destruciton of this people, our government and society is being destroyed the same evil that existed in this secret society.

Vs 46 "There were none that were righteous save it were the disciples of Jesus." We are arriving at this point, too.

Essay: The Parallels Between Ancient America and Modern Society

In 4 Nephi 1, we witness a remarkable period of peace, prosperity, and righteousness among the Nephites after the visit of Jesus Christ to the Americas. This chapter describes a Zion-like society where the love of God reigns in the hearts of the people, leading to an unprecedented period of unity, contentment, and divine blessings. However, over time, pride, materialism, and division eroded this harmony, eventually leading to the society’s downfall. When examining this narrative, one cannot help but draw striking parallels to the history of the United States and the trajectory of our modern civilization.

The Blessings of Unity and Faith

The society described in 4 Nephi experienced extraordinary blessings, beginning with their complete dedication to Christ. In verses 1–18, we read of miraculous healings, the absence of contention, and a just society where no one was rich or poor, and all shared their goods equally. For over a century, they lived in peace, free from murder, robbery, and social divisions. What allowed this civilization to thrive was their collective adherence to the teachings of Christ, the presence of the Holy Ghost, and their deep sense of community, where they truly treated each other as equals.

Similarly, early settlers in North America sought a place where they could worship freely and live according to their beliefs. They sought religious freedom and a society grounded in moral values and unity. Much like the Nephites, they initially experienced blessings that included prosperity, freedom, and the opportunity to build a society rooted in faith. These pioneers, many of whom were deeply devout, cultivated a sense of community and shared purpose, aiming to create a “city on a hill”—a beacon of religious liberty and moral righteousness.

The Inevitable Downfall: Pride and Division

The eventual downfall of the Nephite civilization, however, offers a sobering lesson. By verses 19–49, we see how pride, class distinctions, and a desire for material wealth began to creep back into their society. People sought to outdo one another in appearance and possessions, causing divisions between rich and poor. They began to form false churches for personal gain and rejected the true disciples of Christ. This led to the persecution of Christians, the rise of secret combinations, and a complete breakdown of societal unity.

In much the same way, the United States has faced increasing division, particularly in recent years. Pride, materialism, and the pursuit of personal gain have replaced the shared values that once united the nation. Social and economic classes have become more pronounced, and the gap between rich and poor continues to widen. The concept of having “all things common” has given way to a hyper-focus on individual wealth and success. Even more concerning is the growing hostility toward people of faith, as Christian beliefs and values are increasingly met with contempt in the public sphere. Much like the Nephites, who began to revile and persecute the true followers of Christ (verses 34–35), modern society seems to be distancing itself from the religious and moral foundations that once held it together.

Secret Combinations and Societal Decay

A particularly chilling parallel between the Nephite civilization and today’s world is the rise of secret combinations—groups that work in secrecy to gain power, wealth, and control over society. In 4 Nephi, these secret societies contributed significantly to the downfall of the Nephites, much like how corrupt groups and organizations today can undermine governments and institutions for their selfish purposes. In modern times, we may recognize the same forces at work in various forms of corruption, manipulation, and political intrigue that threaten the moral and social fabric of society.

As user notes, the presence of the Gadianton robbers in the Nephite society bears resemblance to the forms of corruption and lawlessness we see in modern governments. Secret societies, whether ancient or modern, thrive in darkness and deception, leading to societal decay from within. When power and influence are wielded for selfish or nefarious ends, the people suffer, and the foundation of righteous living is compromised.

The Path Forward: Lessons for Today

The story of 4 Nephi serves as both a warning and a guide for our modern civilization. The Nephites’ period of peace and prosperity, followed by pride and division, closely mirrors the historical timeline of the United States. Like the Nephites, our society was built on religious and moral foundations, and it prospered as long as those values were maintained. But as pride, materialism, and division crept in, the social fabric began to fray.

The lesson from 4 Nephi is clear: unity and peace are only possible through humility, love, and adherence to the principles of righteousness. When we allow pride and contention to govern our interactions, society will inevitably descend into chaos. The Nephite civilization shows us that even the most prosperous and blessed societies can fall when they stray from the path of righteousness.

As we reflect on the state of our own nation, we are reminded that a return to unity and prosperity requires a collective return to faith, humility, and love for one another. Just as the Nephites’ blessings were tied to their covenants and their commitment to the teachings of Christ, so too can modern society find peace by embracing values that transcend pride and materialism. Only then can we hope to restore the unity and blessings that have been lost over time.

In conclusion, 4 Nephi offers a powerful reflection on the rise and fall of civilizations. The similarities between the ancient Nephite society and the trajectory of modern America are undeniable, particularly when it comes to pride, division, and the rejection of religious values. As we learn from the past, we are reminded of the importance of humility, faith, and love in building a society that can withstand the forces of pride and materialism.
