Mosiah 8:9 The Jaredites wrote their record on 24 plates of pure gold.

28:12 The Nephites were desirous beyond measure to read this record.

How eager are we to learn of learn of past civilizations. Do we study the scriptures and histories of people? Do we value their experiences and their testimonies?

We have an abridgment of the Jaredite record, called the Book of Ether. (Someday we’ll get the rest.)

Mosiah 28:18 The Nephites sorrowed over their tragic loss, but they rejoiced in the knowledge that they received.

Ether 8:2326 “it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you … that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men”

The Lord Will Guide Me through my Mortal Journey
Ether 6:1–12

What has the Lord prepared for you to light your journey, like he prepared the 16 stones for the Jaredites.

Ether 6:8 Are you save in (your barges) as you travel through winds and waves? What can you learn from the Jaredites? The Lord is also leading you towards a promised land. Are you heeding Him and following in His way?

“Sing praises unto the Lord.” The Jaredites expressed their gratitude and love for God through song and praise (see Ether 6:9). You might look for or create opportunities to use music and heartfelt testimony to praise God at home and at church. For example, it might be appropriate to sing a hymn of praise like “Praise the Lord with Heart and Voice” (Hymns, no. 73) when studying Ether 6:1–12.

How do hymns help to lighten your load and light your path?

For kids:

I can trust Heavenly Father to comfort me when I am scared.
Ether 6:1–12

We all have difficult days. Acknowledge that your children do to, and allow them to express their emotions in healthy ways. Teach them that they can always come to you for comfort and support and that they can also turn to Heavenly Father in pray, in Jesus’s name, and He will bring them aid, comfort, and inspiration.

Ether 6:1–12 Help children to find how the Jaredites trusted in the Lord on some of their really tough and scary days. (See below.)

How has Heavenly Father blessed you during some of you hardest times?

Walk Humbly Before the Lord
Ether 6:5–18, 309:28–3510:1–2

Look for times when the Jaredites were humble before the Lord in the following verses: Ether 6:5–18, 309:28–35; and 10:1–2. (See below)

Why did these Jaredites humble themselves in these situations? How did they show their humility? How did God bless them as a result?

Ether 6:17 “And they were taught to walk humbly before the Lord; and they were also taught from on high.”

Mosiah 4:11–12 King Benjamin also taught His people to be humble and to remember the greatness of God and our total reliance upon Him for everything. If we are humble, praying and repenting daily, remembering the Lord’s sacrifice for us and having faith in what’s to come; we “will always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins; and ye shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created you, or in the knowledge of that which is just and true.”

Alma 32:14–18 Alma describes what a blessing it is to us to have faith and to choose to be humble; instead of having to be compelled to be humble.

Do Justly, Love Mercy, and Walk Humbly with God

For kids:

Remembering what the Lord has done brings gratitude and peace.
Ether 6:9, 12, 307:2710:2

Ether 6:12 When they arrived in the promised land, the Jaredites remembered to kneel and give thanks, and they shed tears of show.

Ether 6:9, 12 Help the children look in these verses for descriptions of the Jaredites giving thanks to the Lord: They sang praises; they said prayers of thanks all the day long; they kept praying when it was nighttime; they bowed themselves upon the promised land and humbled themselves before the Lord; they shed tears of joy; they recognized the Lord’s tender mercies to them. The remembered to thank the Lord.

How does singing praises to the Lord help prepare us to be humble, to pray, and to worship the Lord?

My Heavenly Father Loves Me

What are you thankful for?

What did the righteous Jaredite Kings remember?

Ether 6:30 “And it came to pass that Orihah did walk humbly before the Lord, and did remember how great things the Lord had done for his father, and also taught his people how great things the Lord had done for their fathers.”

7:27 “And there were no more wars in the days of Shule; and he remembered the great things that the Lord had done for his fathers in bringing them across the great deep into the promised land; wherefore he did execute judgment in righteousness all his days.”

10:2 “And it came to pass that Shez did remember the destruction of his fathers, and he did build up a righteous kingdom; for he remembered what the Lord had done in bringing Jared and his brother across the deep; and he did walk in the ways of the Lord; and he begat sons and daughters.”

How can we remember all the good things God has done for us?

Praying to Heavenly Father and giving Him thanks every day will help us remember. It will also help us remember if we write down the good things that He does for us every day and our happy experiences and the growth of our testimony.

We can make it a regular habit of writing blessings down that we receive from the Lord. We could keep a gratitude journal and write things in it that we are thankful for.

Here’s some good ideas about record keeping from President Eyring:

For kids:

I am blessed when I follow God’s prophet.
Ether 7:24–27

What are some things the prophet has asked us to do? Did you listen to conference? Are you following the prophet?

Why do you think it is important to follow the prophet?

What happened to the Jaredites when they followed the prophet?

Ether 7:24–27 There is always safety in following the prophet, both spiritually and physically. When we don’t follow the prophet, there is destruction.

How have you and your family been blessed by following the prophet?

I Can Become a Christlike Leader
Ether 7–11

Though this section covers 28 or so generations, and it is only an abridgment, we can see a pattern of what happens to the people when they are righteous, and what happens to the people when they are wicked.

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below? (See in scripture chapters below)

Jesus Christ

Matthew 18:1–4 We need to be humble and Childlike in order to enter the Kingdom of heaven. We do not attain to spiritual greatness by seeking to elevate ourselves above others. Follow the Lord’s example. He always did the will of His Father.
20:20–28 No humble following of Jesus will ever be slighted. We shouldn’t seek great honors above others. Christ’s gospel is one of salvation for us all. Like Paul taught, Jesus fulfilled the law and made it possible for us to all become joint-heirs with Christ to all the Father has.
It is up to our Heavenly Father and His Son to determine what is best for us. We need to follow Them in great humility and be thankful for all good things that come from Them.
23:11 He that is greatest among shall be your servant.

The Greatest among You

What opportunities do you have to serve, lead, or influence others in your home, ministering, and community? How will develop patterns of Christ-like leadership?

Principles of Leadership in the Church 4.2,

The Lord Does Not Work in Darkness
Ether 8:7–26

“When people conspire to keep their wicked acts secret, they are involved in a secret combination.” The government needs to start to be accountable to We the People and to God.

What secret combination do you see in Ether 8:7–18? (See below)

Helaman 1:9–12 People made pacts not to expose Kishkumen for murdering Pahoran.

2:2–11 Gadianton conspires with Kishkumen and others to give them great power if they put him in the judgment seat. Kishkumen seeks to kill Helaman; but, Helaman’s servant stabs him in the heart. Gadianton’s band flees.

6:16–30 Gadianton’s band was formed as a result of prosperity, greed, and the desire for power. Many people joined it. The Lamanites worked hard to get rid of it among their people. The Nephites supported it.

It’s an election year. I think as a follower of Jesus Christ, a Christian, it becomes me to vote for the freedom of our Country and with my vote to oppose those who are seeking to denounce faith, religion, honesty, and righteousness. I cannot condone abortion, corrupting our children with anti-Christianity wokeness and transitioning. We’ve given sway to Gadianton robbers throughout our government, County, and world-wide interconnectedness for too long; indeed my lifetime.

My mother was correct to call abortion the greatest evil that our Country ever embraced. Satan wants to destroy life and the potential for growth and good. He also wants to rob us of our identity as sons and daughters of God. We cannot accept the baseness of the agendas being push on our children and youth, but must vote for leaders that accept Israel’s God and His laws and His gospel.

Moses 5:29–33 Cain was the first one to set up a secret combination directly with the devil. We need to understand that those who are involved in secret combinations and in league with the devil.

2 Nephi 26:22–24 The Lord doesn’t work in darkness. He doesn’t make evil pacts. Everything He has done and does is for the good of the world. He invited everyone to have faith in Him, repent, be baptized in His name, receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and endure in faith to the end. He atoned for us so that we can all be redeemed through Him.

For kids:

The Lord is merciful when I repent.
Ether 9:28–3511:5–8

Look for the Lords pattern of mercy in Ether 9:28–35 and Ether 11:5–8. (See below)

Look for pictures in the Gospel Art Book of other people in the scriptures who repented and were forgiven.

The Jaredite barges are driven by the winds to the promised land—The people praise the Lord for His goodness—Orihah is appointed king over them—Jared and his brother die.

Ether 6:1–12 Help children to find how the Jaredites trusted in the Lord on some of their really tough and scary days. Look for times when the Jaredites were humble before the Lord in the following verses: Ether 6:5–18, 30,

Vs 3 The Lord can perform all the miracles, but we have to have the faith and believe it will happen.

Vs 4 Sometimes we have to move from out comfort zones into something new, even a step into the unknown and commend ourselves to God.

Remember though that the Jaredites made the necessary preparations before entering into the vessels. They took the food that they needed for themselves and their animals. They had a year’s supply.

Vs 7 “when they were encompassed about by many waters they did cry unto the Lord, and he did bring them forth again upon the top of the waters.”

Vs 8 Don't you want to arrive home to your Heavenly Father? Don't you want the gift of Eternal Life? Remember it is necessary to have the strong winds drive you forward in this life. The Lord allows for it, so that you are propelled towards Him, if you so choose to be.

Vs 9 Sing praises to the Lord all the day love, even when you are struggling.

Vs 10 Even while we are driven forth, with the Lord as our Light and our Guide, there is no monster that can destroy us.

Vs 12 I need to express more humility, gratitude, thanksgiving, and joy for the Lord's protection over me in my journeys and for continually delivering me from harm.

Vs 12 Gave thanks

Vs 13 Planted

Vs 15 Had children

Vs 16 The had children in the barges.

Vs 17 “17 And they were taught to walk humbly before the Lord; and they were also taught from on high.”

Vs 19 First census

Vs 27-30 Orihah remembered the Lord and the great things He did for the people. He also taught the people to remember. He was a righteous king.

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below?
Orihah—Ether 6:307:1 He was a  humble, righteous king.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/ether/7?lang=eng

Orihah reigns in righteousness—Amid usurpation and strife, the rival kingdoms of Shule and Cohor are set up—Prophets condemn the wickedness and idolatry of the people, who then repent.

Vs 1 Orihah reigned in righteousness all his days.

Vs 5 Corihor took his father Kib captive.

Vs 7-9 Shule gave the kingdom back to his father Kib.

Vs 10-11 Kib bestowed kingdom upon Shule, and Shule reigned in righteousness.

Vs 13 Shule gave Corihor power in his kingdom, even after he'd taken their father hostage.

Vs 17 Shule's grandson Noah also took him into captivity.

Vs 18 The sons of Shule returned their father to his kingdom.

Vs 19 Noah's son Cohor followed his evil path.

Vs 20 Cohor killed in battle he waged.

Vs 22 Nimrod, Cohor's son was a friend to his great-grandfather Shule.

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below?
Shule—Ether 7:23–27

Vs 23-25 The people had no respect to the prophets, but King Shule did. Because of this, they were allowed to continue to preach, and the people repented.

Vs 26-27 The people repented. Shule had peace the rest of his reign. He reigned in righteousness all his days.

There is strife and contention over the kingdom—Akish forms an oath-bound secret combination to slay the king—Secret combinations are of the devil and result in the destruction of nations—Modern Gentiles are warned against the secret combination that will seek to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries.

Currently there is a secret combination that is seeking to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries.

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below?
Jared—Ether 8:1–7, 11–15
Omer was righteous and his son Jared was wicked. He gathered enough people to him, put his father in captivity, and stole his kingdom. Corianton and Esrom regained the kingdom for their father.

Jared accepted his daughter’s proposal to dig up the evil records of old and get Akish to kill his own father, so that he could have the kingdom again. He formed an evil coalition with his friends.

What secret combination do you see in Ether 8:7–18?

Vs 7-10 Jared's daughter makes a plan to give the kingdom bath to her father. Akish forms again a secret combination, to gain Jared's daughter to wife and to have power in Jared's kingdom.

Vs 17-19 It is unfortunate that Jared had been such an unrighteous man. When he was given a second chance, he ruined it again for himself and his household. His evil daughter put it in his heart to use secret cominbations, and she had him put it into Akish's heart, even though he'd been a friend to Omer. Love of money and power is corrupting.

Vs 20-22 We are warned that the past civilizations in this land were destroyed by secret combinations. We are headed that way. We need to repent and Gather Israel.

Vs 23-26 The only hope for the salvation of this Country is for its people to repent and to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Vs 26 Look at why Moroni wrote these words. He has hope that we will repent and change and save ourselves and this Country.

The kingdom passes from one to another by descent, intrigue, and murder—Emer saw the Son of Righteousness—Many prophets cry repentance—A famine and poisonous serpents plague the people.

Vs 2-3 The Lord was merciful to Omer and those who didn't seek his destruction. Pay attention to dreams and promptings from the Lord and from the Spirit.

Vs 5 Since Akish couldn’t take the head of Omer, he took Akish’s head instead.

Vs 7-9 Akish, who had once been a good man, now worried his son might take his kingdom, so he starved him to death; his brother Nimrah was angry and left to be with his grandfather Omer.

Vs 11-12 Akish, who had once been a good man, now worried his son might take his kingdom, so he starved him to death; his brother Nimrah was angry and left to be with his grandfather Omer.

Vs 15-22 Emer was a righteous king, like his father Omer. The Lord again blessed the people and the land.

Coriantum became king and "he even saw the Son of Righteousness, and did rejoice and glory in his day; and he died in peace."

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below?
Emer and Coriantum—Ether 9:21–23 Righteous. Saw the Lord.

Heth—Ether 9:26–30 Heth was wicked and dethroned his father, and killed him with his own sword.

Look for times when the Jaredites were humble before the Lord in the following verses; and look for the Lord’s Pattern of Mercy: 9:28–35.

There was a dearth, then there were poisonous serpents. The people ate carcasses in their path. When they repented and were sufficiently humble, the Lord sent rain to heal the people and the land. He showed to them His great power in preserving them.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/ether/10?lang=eng

One king succeeds another—Some of the kings are righteous; others are wicked—When righteousness prevails, the people are blessed and prospered by the Lord.

Look for times when the Jaredites were humble before the Lord in the following verses: 10:1–2.

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below?

Shez—Ether 10:1–2

Vs 1 Shez was a descendant of Heth. Everyone else (of their family) died in the famine.

Vs 2 Shez was righteous. He remembered goodness of the Lord and built up a righteous kingdom.

Riplakish—Ether 10:5–8 Riplakish wasn’t righteous. He was a womanizer. He taxed the people heavily. If people couldn’t pay, he threw them in prison, and they had to build lovely things for him. He afflicted the people with his abominations and whoredoms. The people raised up against him and he was killed.

Morianton—Ether 10:9–11  gathered outcasts together and fought against the people. He gained power and then eased the people and was fair to them. But He was still an unrighteous king that committed whoredoms.

Vs 13-18 Kim didn’t reign righteously. His brother rose up against him. Kim served in captivity; so did Levi; but Levi gained the kingdom back and then he did what was right in the sight of the Lord.

Corom was righteous too. Next came Kib and Lish.

Lib—Ether 10:19–28

Vs 19-20 Lib did good in Lord's sight. Poisonous serpents destroyed. People could hung for food. Lib was a good hunter.

Vs 21-28 During Lib's reign the people were greatly blessed and very industrious. They were amongst the happiest people of the earth.

Many others through end of chapter.

Wars, dissensions, and wickedness dominate Jaredite life—Prophets predict the utter destruction of the Jaredites unless they repent—The people reject the words of the prophets.

What do you learn about leadership from the examples—negative and positive—of the kings listed below?

Vs 1-3 People rejected the prophets. They fled to Com for protection. He listened to them and was blessed the remainder of his days.

Look for the Lords pattern of mercy in Ether 11:5–8.

Vs 4-5 Shiblom’s brother rebelled against him. There was a great war. Shiblom’s brother caused that prophets should be put to death.

Vs 6-8 Great destruction was among the people because of the prophecies and their wickedness. To the extent that they repented, the Lord had mercy on them.

Ethem—Ether 11:11–13

Vs 11 Ethem was wicked

Vs 12-13 People again rejected all the words of the prophets. They mourned and withdrew from the people.

Vs 20-22 Words of prophets again rejected. This people would be destroyed and the land given to another people.
